General Duties

  • Demonstrates commitment to service excellence and safety by participating in the time out verification process 100%.
  • Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment ensuring that all equipment is present and operational before the patient enters the room.
  • Maintains sterility using principles of aseptic practice, reporting and suspected breaks in sterile field and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Checks and maintains equipment and coordinates repair work as necessary.
  • Completes procedures in timely and accurate manner.
  • Anticipates the need for equipment and supplies during preparation for the procedure and throughout the procedure.
  • Notifies Nurse and Surgical Team of change in patient condition.
  • Manages patient crisis appropriately.
  • Responds appropriately in Code Blue situations in and outside the OR.
  • Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient’s needs and privacy during the surgical experience.
  • Understands the necessity for and maintains cost control in use of patient and hospital supplies and equipment within Surgical Services.
  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients/significant others.
  • Incorporates cultural/religious/psychosocial aspects of illness/hospitalization for patients/significant others into plan of care.
  • Performs sponge, sharp and instrument counts in accordance with hospital policy and monitors sterile field for potential foreign body retention hazards.
  • Reports risk management and patient safety concerns to appropriate persons.
  • Maintains infection control precautions as per policy 100% of the time.

  • Serves as resource for unit functioning, i.e., equipment repairs, supplies, use of infrequently used equipment.
  • Demonstrates flexibility with work assignments, willing to cross-train/float to other areas as needed.
  • Assists in new employee orientation.
  • Understands and utilizes the chain of command.

Licenses/Certificates:

1. Certificate of graduation from an accredited School of Surgical Technology or military equivalent.

2. Current CPR certification.

3. CST preferred.
