I. Position Function:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Pathology and the Lab Administrative Director independently performs diversified administrative and secretarial duties for the smooth operation of the Anatomic Pathology Department. Coordinates work flow and training of new personnel.

II. Job Relationships:

Supervised by Lab Administrative Director and Director of Pathology.

Must be able to collaborate and effectively communicate with physicians and other health care professionals.

Interacts with couriers and all clinical lab staff across the Steward System.

III. Authority:

Coordinates work flow.

Compiles monthly statistics for the department.

Prepares weekly and monthly conferences for the Pathologists.

Has the authority to complete and forward billing information

Has the authority to contact Biomedical Engineering regarding equipment issues

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Transcribes confidential and technical medical dictation.

Responsible for all surgical pathology cases be completed daily.

Prepares pathology cases for outside consultation.

Transmits accurate detailed, confidential patient information to physicians.

Responsible for coordinating and charging (ER/PR, DNA, Lymphocyte Markers, Renal biopsy, Muscle and Nerve biopsies).

Maintains appropriate patient records and documentation.

Transcribes a wide variety of material, correspondence, memorandums, teaching materials and publications for the Pathology staff.

To check and obtain all necessary paperwork, authorizations.

Registration of patient demographic information into computer.

Accession of specimens into Meditech computer systems.

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

Sort and distribute incoming mail.

File Pathology reports and slides.

Deliver specimens to the cutting room.

Answers the phone for the Laboratory Director's.

V. Reporting Requirements:

Reports immediately to supervisor of any deviation of normal operations.

Reports to physicians any suspicious results on a pathology report immediately.

Compiles monthly statistics for department.

VI. Accountability:

Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital-related, medical staff-related, and patient-related data and information.

Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital policies and procedures.

Shall be accountable for accurately transcribing all pathology reports and calling in all atypical reports.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

HS Diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience:

Two years at a Senior Secretary/Coordinator level.

Minimum skills/abilities:

Broad knowledge of medical terminology, general office skills in professional environment, Computer and Work Processing, and Medical transcription.




Training in Pathology terminology.
