I. Position Function:
Operating Room Assistant in Operative services functions at the advanced level of support for direct care of patients in the Operative Room. The role includes case-cart and case preparation for anesthesia and/or nursing. It includes first-call biomedical technical troubleshooting, general inventory maintenance, and any related activities.
II. Job Relationships:
Reports to Clinical Support Supervisor.
Relates to nurses, physicians, patients and their families, as well as support staff in other departments providing supplies, linen, trash disposal, etc.
Cooperates with other ORAs to share workload and response to immediate needs.
Precepts new employees and develops ORA staff interns in new skills.
Has the authority to summon clinical assistance for patients or families.
Has the authority to direct the workflow in the absence of the Clinical Support Supervisor.
Has the authority to identify obstacles/problems or poor compliance to standards affecting support activities.
Has the authority to initiate corrective problem-solving to achieve standards and goals.
Has the authority to initiate purchases related to inventory and repairs.
IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,
and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."
Responsible for the schedule progress related to immediate, effective response.
Responsible for indirect patient support related to either anesthesia or nursing. This is provided through set-up, independent activities under the direction of an RN or MD, especially as related to high acuity patients and emergency situations.
Responsible for specific independent activities as trained, such as setting up anesthesia lines, opening sterile goods, reprocessing special equipment or instrumentation.
Responsible for first-call assessment of equipment dysfunction, maintenance and repair. Communicates status to caregivers and assists/implements plan for replacement, loaner, etc.
Responsible for supportive, responsive attitude fostering teamwork, patient-focused care, and service mentality. May assign tasks and take a leadership role in absence of Clinical Support Supervisor.
Responsible for inventory and supply duties as listed or assigned to restock of rooms and carts.
Responsible for productive application of time to support patient care functions and departmental goals.
Responsible for preceptorship and encouragement of new skills that support growth to ORAs, unit secretary, scheduling, or other functions of Operative Services.

Reports problems and obstacles to the Clinical Support Supervisor. This includes un-received supply requests, incomplete cleaning tasks, violation of infection control policies, uncooperative behaviors, un-contained waste, etc.
Accountable for timely, effective response to needs. Immediate acknowledgment to OR team that specific responses are underway.
Accountable for clean, safe environment. Takes responsible, effective actions when needed.
Accountable for timely, safe, and courteous preparation of procedures and patients. This includes reassurance to family members and patients, intervention on the patient's behalf if inappropriate behaviors are observed, intervention of the department's behalf to assure that agreed standards and policies are met.
Accountable for identified restocking o rooms, storerooms, and carts. This includes feedback to clinical staff on stock-out, back orders, and unclear instructions or listings.
Accountable for cooperative, effective team work within ORA group and OR team. This includes equitable distribution of tasks and assignments, supportive interactions cross-coverage for vacation, illness, and other short-term staffing needs.
High school graduate
Some College of advanced-level studies/certification.
Proven work skills in OR and/or ICU setting.
Proven skills of ORA intern or within 3 months of hire.
Ability to read and write in English. Second language of Spanish or Russian very helpful.
Ability to manage personal interactions productively.
Learning abilities sufficient to add new skills and participate productively with OR team.
Personal maturity sufficient to teach others and interact with healthcare professionals.
Ability to calculate inventory data.
Full functionality and successful completion of ORA skill set within 6 month probationary period. Successful completion of at least two of the advanced level ORA-II skill set.
Mature ability to assume responsibilities, take initiative, and accomplish a goal without immediate, continuous supervision.
Work skills appropriate to high-stress environment.
