Job Summary
Under the direction of the Lead Counselor, the Assistant Counselor performs a variety of duties related to the clinical care of substance abuse patients.
Qualifications
Minimum Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology or related Human Service Area is preferred
- 2 years of experience in substance abuse field/clinical setting. Group experience preferred.
Minimum skills/abilities:
- Knowledge of addiction, chemical dependency, dual diagnosis, mental health, psychiatric diagnosis and the recovery process.
- Competence in practice of clinical skills
- Familiarity and working knowledge of the DSM-IV Diagnostic system.
- Computer skills are essential.
- Ability to read, write and speak English.
Certification/Licensure:
- Prefer CADAC/CAS/CAC/CRC.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Performs individual counseling, group counseling, psychoeducational groups, and case management.
- Provides support to clients/families via family sessions and brief counseling, education, and coordination of comprehensive aftercare plans.
- Assures that a client's substance abuse disorder is assessed in an integrated Bio-Psycho-Social-Cultural-Spiritual-Environmental context.
- Must be able to collaborate and communicate with referring agencies, such as EAP professionals, private practitioners, probation officers, halfway house staff, primary care doctors, community mental health agencies, etc.
- Consult with other disciplines throughout the hospital regarding clinical issues.
- Notify the referring professional or agency of patient/client’s participation in progress in treatment.
- Maintains standards of clinical record keeping:
- Documentation of biopsychosocial assessments, daily contacts, treatment planning, and discharge planning
- Seeks out feedback from treatment team and peers regarding role functions.
- Actively utilizes supervision to further enhance clinical skills and performance.
- Serves as resource to the interdisciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, residents, peers, etc.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
