TITLE: Cardiology Technician (EKG)

SHIFT: 8:30am-5pm FULL TIME

DEPARTMENT: Cardiology

UNION: YES

REPORTS TO: Director, Radiology

UNIT: CARDIOLOGY

POSITION SUMMARY:

The EKG Technician must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide EKG and holter monitoring to patients ranging in age from infancy, throughout adulthood. The EKG Technician must possess the ability to select the appropriate equipment, assess data reflective of the patient's age, and interpret the appropriate information required to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Job Responsibilities/Competency:

  1. Performs diagnostic electrocardiograms in a timely manner, completing EKGs within 10 minutes.

Confirms physician order for all exams.

Effects transport of equipment or patients to minimize delays in scheduling, as periodically observed by supervisor.

Explains procedure to all patients; answers questions re: procedure to patients' satisfaction.

Proficiently operates ECG machine according to standard protocols and departmental procedures to complete study in ten minutes or less and maintain less than 5% rejection of studies for "technical inadequacy".

Logs all exams per departmental protocol.

  1. Operates computerized ECG system:

Quickly retrieves ECG reports as needed from McKesson Cardiac PACS.

Prepares all ECG exams for timely physician interpretation per established protocols.

Makes sure there are no unreported ECGs greater than two days old.

  1. Applies Holter monitoring equipment:

Explains procedure to all patients; correctly answers questions regarding procedure to patients' satisfaction, according to Dept. policy.

Applies Holter monitoring device according to established protocols; ensures adequate signal amplitude and minimal baseline artifact on all recordings.

Explains use of patient diary and recording clock to all patients to effect accurate correlation of symptoms and events; answers all questions regarding diary to patients' satisfaction.

Maintains an inventory of recording supplies sufficient to eliminate delays in service.

  1. Provides technical assistance during exercise tolerance testing:

Explains procedure and obtains written consent from all patients; witnesses same; answers all questions regarding procedure to patients' satisfaction.

Prepares patient expeditiously for exercise tolerance testing, applying leads and electrodes according to standard and departmental protocols.

Demonstrates use of treadmill to all patients prior to testing, as periodically observed by supervisor.

Obtains preliminary data and baseline ECG's for all patients according to established guidelines.

Operates stress testing system following established testing and reporting protocols to maintain patient safety and provide all data necessary for accurate interpretation.

  1. Performs miscellaneous office and clerical functions:

Maintains ongoing log of all examinations performed which is complete, accurate, neat, and legible, as periodically observed by supervisor.

Locates and reports test results when requested by appropriate parties; provides reports immediately when possible, as soon as possible otherwise.

Answer telephones in a courteous and helpful manner at all times with no more than 1 verbal warning.

Receives, directs, and assists patients entering the EKG Department; approaches patients promptly, initiates conversation whenever possible, and follows through on patient requests to patients' satisfaction, as periodically observed by supervisor.

Schedules examinations according to department protocols; correlates appointments with related departments whenever appropriate.

Locates cardiologists for "stat" readings as soon as possible and whenever necessary.

Prepares charge slips and related forms daily for hospital and physician billing for all exams according to established guidelines.

Maintains visibly neat and clean work area; stores supplies in appropriate designated locations as soon as possible after delivery; stores ECG machines and other equipment in designated areas when not in use, as periodically observed by supervisor.

  1. Maintains equipment and supplies.

Maintains equipment in clean, operational condition to maximize productivity and minimize risk of nosocomial infection; ECG machines should be visibly clean and free of blood, stains, and dried solutions; less than 10% of Departmental ECG machines should be out of service at any time: electrodes should be cleaned or replaced daily, and disinfected weekly with alcohol or other appropriate sanitizing solution as indicated by I.D. guidelines.

Effects minor repairs to equipment as soon as possible to minimize delays in service. Is able to isolate source of deficiency, replace minor parts, and trace electrical artifacts to their source.

Reports major mechanical failures to Section Manager immediately to avoid delays in effecting repairs.

Maintains operating supplies to avoid disruptions in service and orders same according to procedures established by Materials Management Department.

Performs weekly check of EKG equipment which is located in other areas of the hospital for operating condition and supplies.

  1. Takes maximal advantage of educational and training opportunities and maintains yearly CPR certification.

Dresses for work according to departmental instructions.

Is proficient in obtaining ECG's within 3 months, applying Holter monitors within 6 months, and conducting exercise tolerance tests within 9 months.

  1. Organizational and Inter-personal Skills - with no more than (2) reminders or complaints per year.

Organizes assignments, sets priorities appropriately to maximize completion of assignments.

  1. Age and Competency Standard.

The EKG Tech must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients ranging in age from adolescence, adulthood and geriatrics during test.

The EKG Tech must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's age, and interpret the appropriate information required to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs and inform physician of such.

Each technician shall be required to complete an annual competency review program.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Able to hear, see and communicate (written/verbally) with patients in an effective manner.
  • Able to carry, move, assemble and retrieve all necessary equipment for treatment.
  • Able to walk, stand move, stoop bend, and lift to perform job responsibilities.
  • Able to complete work on full assigned shift productively and basic computer skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with large numbers of professionals.
  • Ability to work harmoniously while under pressure.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

Education: Graduate of a accredited certification program

Experience : One year experience as an EKG technician.

Certification/Licensure: Certificate of Completion from a recognized EKG Training Program required.

Software/Hardware: Meditech Preferred
