JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nutritional Services, the Clinical Dietitian is responsible for assessing, directing, and providing nutritional care to patients adhering to established guidelines of the department, medical staff, and regulatory agencies. Must follow and adhere to all federal and state laws and regulations, as well as the Code of Conduct and Performance Standards.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.

2. Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).

3. Promotes a culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.

4. Works to ensure compliance with regulations pertaining to food safety, nutritional care management, HACCP 7 Steps, and DNV (or JCAHO) Standards.

5. Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement:

  • Keeps informed of regulatory guidelines and adjusts practice accordingly.
  • Works to ensure compliance with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Participates in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives related to patient care and service.
  • Tracks quality assurance indicators and action plans.
  • Assists in development of departmental standards of nutritional care.
  • Conducts periodic patient rounds to determine adequacy of nutritional intake and to assess adequacy/acceptability of meal and of service.

    6. Coordinate appropriate and timely nutrition care to patients on assigned units.
  • Provides nutrition assessment of all patients identified at nutrition risk per established timeframe/guidelines.
  • Utilizes the Nutrition Care Process as recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Calculates appropriate nutrition regimen to meet specific in-patient needs (therapeutic diets, enteral formula, TPN, and other sources).
  • Evaluates response to therapy and adjusts plan accordingly.
  • Adapts nutritional plan to specific economic, social, cultural, and age-appropriate needs of patients to enhance compliance with therapy.
  • Counsels on nutritional modifications or therapeutic diet to patient and/or family and provides appropriate nutrition information in both written and verbal format.
  • Maintains accurate records/documentation of patient care per departmental and institutional policy.

    7. Collaborate with other professionals to integrate and communicate nutrition principles that enhance patient outcomes.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary patient care rounds/conferences or discharge planning on assigned unit/areas.
  • Works in partnership with patient care team to ensure implementation of nutrition care plan and follow-up on recommendations or modifications.
  • Communicates by written, verbal, or electronic methods with physicians to coordinate nutritional care of patient.

    8. Maintain high level of competency and professional development related to nutrition trends, research, policy, certifications, guidelines, and standards of practice.
  • Keeps informed of new developments, products, formulas, and clinical practice related to patient population and diagnosis.
  • Applies and shares newly acquired knowledge to working environment and presents to peers.
  • Identifies learning needs of unit/areas or departmental staff and provides appropriate education/in-service.

    9. Leadership:
  • Represents St Joseph Medical Center professionally and ethically at all times.
  • Advises on clinical related issues at departmental and inter-departmental committees/meetings.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Effectively communicates with departmental managers, nursing, medical, and other facility staff to ensure achievement of department goals.
  • Creates an environment in which continuous improvement is measured and rewarded.
  • Manages projects for timely and accurate completion.
  • Assists in managing activities of diet office as needed.
  • Serves as a preceptor to dietetic interns during their Clinical Nutrition rotation.

    10. Maintain cleanliness of work area, personal hygiene, dress code compliance, and safe work habits.

    11. Complete appropriate assignments and projects as needed.

    12. Supportive of the compliance program set forth by Steward:
  1. Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance.
  2. Adheres to dealing appropriately and fairly with employee misconduct.
  3. Enforces all compliance policies as they pertain to his/her area.
  4. Provides and assures timely compliance education as requested by the Regional Compliance & Safety Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.

    13. Sets an example to all staff in their daily activities.

    MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Completed a Coordinated Undergraduate Program or Dietetic Internship and/or Hospital experience
  • At least 1 year in clinical area preferred
  • Ability to understand and utilize current, acceptable standards in the area of clinical dietetics

LICENSE REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Licensed by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation within 3 months of start date.

EDUCATION & TRAINING:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field
  • Completion of approved clinical program
  • Master's degree or advanced degree program preferred

SKILLS:

  • Technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to effectively communicate with physicians, health team members, patients and families.
  • Ability to prioritize work with minimal supervision in order to independently carry out the duties of the position.
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
