I. Position Function:

Under the direction of the CNM, and as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team, screens/levels patients for nutritional risk, assesses nutritional status and develops/implements nutrition care plans for identified patients considering individual and age-specific requirements.

Monitors and evaluates effectiveness of nutrition care plans, and revises care plans as needed.

Provides age-specific nutrition/diet/food-drug education to patients and/or family/care givers.

Assists the CNM in performance improvement (PI) initiatives, development of patient education materials, menu analysis, development of standards of care, participation on hospital committees, employee training and diet office supervision.

II. Job Relationships:

Directed by Clinical Nutrition Manager.

Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and work collaboratively with a variety of health care professionals, including physicians, nurses/nursing staff, other dietitians, speech-language pathologists, physical and respiratory therapists, etc.

Must be able to communicate effectively with patients and families/care givers.

Must be able to communicate effectively with Nutrition Assistants and food service employees.

On weekends and holidays, provide supervision to diet office personnel.

III. Authority:

Appropriately screen/level patients for nutritional risk.

Monitor effectiveness of nutrition care plans in accordance with clinical section standards and revise care plans as needed to achieve therapeutic goals.

Recommend and monitor modes of nutrition support (i.e., enteral nutrition, parenteral nutrition).

Provide nutrition education to patients and families/care givers.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."

Screens/levels patients according to clinical section's nutrition risk and intervention guidelines.

Assesses patients appropriate to age and consistent with clinical section's assessment standards and other evidence-based practice guidelines.

Develops, documents, and implements appropriate age-specific nutrition care plans for patients that contain objective, measurable goals. Monitors and evaluates effectiveness of care plans in accordance with clinical section's standards, and revises care plan as needed to achieve therapeutic goals.

Collaborates effectively with members of the healthcare team to implement nutrition care plans and achieve therapeutic goals.

Provides age-specific nutrition counseling to patients and/or families/care providers.

Educates and guides medical, nursing and nutrition staff on fundamental clinical nutrition principles.

Orients, supervises and directs the work of Nutrition Assistants as applicable. Effectively manages clinical area on weekends and holidays.

Participates in and supports department's/section's PI activities, including participating in at least 1 PI project yearly.

Communicates with CNM to keep him/her apraised of issues which may influence department/section function.

Contributes to department goals by participating in staff inservices and department projects.

Adapts meal plans to meet the needs of patients, consistent with age-specific requirements including indentification of food preferences, textures and portion sizes.

Considers cultural and religious practices when planning patient meals and nutritional intervnetions.

Communicates foodservice concerns or problems to the appropriate supervisor/manager.

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

Maintains CEUs in accordance with ADA Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) to maintain active registration status.

Develops and presents inservices/presentations to department and/or hospital staff, including at least 1 presentation yearly.

Participates on multidisciplinary committees as assigned, including at least 1 committee yearly.

Demonstrates initiative to increase knowledge and skills and/or professional status (certifications, degrees, etc.)

Adheres to all department sanitation practices and guidelines to prevent foodborne illness, possible spread of infection and to insure a safe and clean work environment.

Attends all staff meetings and inservice programs as scheduled.

Assists in diet office functions as assigned.

Orients, supervises and directs the work of Nutrition Assistants as requested.

Orients, supervises and directs the work of Dietetic Interns as applicable. Effectively precepts Dietetic Interns including correction of worksheets and timely completion of evaluations.

V. Reporting Requirements:

Reports immediately to a manager/supervisor any patient complaint.

Reports to the Director of Food and Nutrition Services any food service related complaint.

Reports directly to the Clinical Nutrition Manager any issue and/or complaint related to Food and Nutrition Services.

VI. Accountability:

Accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital-related, medical staff-related and patient-related data and information.

Accountable to hospital policies and procedures as applicable.

Accountable to all departmental policies and procedures, including those relating to Infection Control.

Accountable to report all nutrition/food service issues to the appropriate manager/supervisor.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

Bachelors degree in Nutrition (mandatory)

Masters degree in Nutrition (preferred)

Minimum Experience:

Completion of an American Dietetic Association approved internship or AP4 program. If "registration eligible", successful completion of registration exam (i.e., Registered Dietitian status achieved) within 6 months of hire (mandatory)

Internship or work experienced related to long-term care (preferred)

Internship or work experience related to service area hired to cover (preferred)

Registered Dietitian (preferred)

Minimum skills/abilities:

Entry-level clinical nutrition skills (mandatory)

Mid-level clinical nutrition skills (preferred)

Interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to perform prescribed duties effectively (mandatory)


Registered Dietitian - Eligible (mandatory)

Registered Dietitian (preferred, mandatory within 6 mos of employment)

Commonwealth of Massachusetts License (preferred)

Board Certification Nutrition Support (preferred, mandatory after 2 years of employment)

Board Certification (Pediatrics, Renal, Diabetes)(preferred)
