***Clinical Lead Pharmacy Specialist 40hrs/Days

POSITION SUMMARY:

Lead clinical pharmacy specialist (LCPS) works closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other health practitioners to meet the various needs of our patients. The LCPS is responsible for coordinating clinical and operational pharmacy services to ensure that the pharmacy provides optimal services on a daily basis. The lead clinical pharmacy specialist facilitates the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems that promote desirable patient outcomes through the safe cost-effective drug therapies. They supervise and direct professional and support personnel. In the absence of the director of pharmacy, a lead clinical pharmacy specialist will be required to assume the essential responsibilities and perform the duties of the Director of Pharmacy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups’ achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.
  • Ensures safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Facilitates the development of policies and procedures that promote cost effective, appropriate, and safe medication use.
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary changes, and critical pathways as provided by appropriate committees.
  • Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners. Suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to the medical and pharmacist staff as needed.
  • Performs all of the duties and responsibilities of a clinical pharmacist/clinical pharmacy specialist as required, as well as work in collaboration with clinical pharmacists within the Steward group.
  • Provides education and information on pharmaceutical care and drug therapy to pharmacy, nursing, providers, and other clinical staff as needed.
  • Reads and evaluates the medical and pharmacy literature for studies supporting improvements in pharmacy practice.
  • Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department.
  • Collects and analyzes data and maintains documentation of pharmacy activities.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the pharmacy that supports the mission and goals of the hospital, and align with regulatory agencies.
  • Review and complete documentation of any adverse drug reactions.
  • Review all patient falls and complete in the incident reporting system.
  • Prepare and participate as an active member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at the local and system level.
  • Adjust schedule to attend meetings and to assist with workload, to include off hours and weekends when needed.
  • Serves as preceptor to pharmacy interns.
  • Provides training and education to pharmacists and technicians regarding health system pharmacy practice.
  • Supervises and instructs pharmacists, pharmacy interns, and technicians.
  • Participates in the recruiting, interviewing, and training of all pharmacy personnel.
  • Participates in the development of pharmacist and technician job description and performance standards.
  • Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.
  • Prepares all work schedules, monitors workload statistics, and manages Kronos.
  • Ensures an adequate staffing level for all shifts.
  • Participates in all committees/functions required by the organization.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
  • Familiar with Meditech, Pyxis, Alaris pumps

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or PharmD
  • Graduate of an ACPE and accredited school of pharmacy
  • Licensed pharmacist in the state of Massachusetts
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of practice experience
