This job is located at the Saint Anne’s 15 bed Geriatric Psychiatry Unit located off campus at the New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton, MA.

The Nurse Manager is primarily responsible for coordinating patient care and daily unit operations. The Nurse Manager also assists the Director with hiring, orienting, and scheduling staff; performance improvement projects; and other duties as assigned. The Nurse Manager participates in activities to achieve clinical, financial and organizational outcomes and may provide direct patient care as needed.

  • Assumes responsibility for the unit in the absence of the Unit Director
  • Oversees the scheduling of staff to ensure fair, adequate and appropriate shift coverage based on the staffing grid, staff requests and the needs of the unit
  • Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing practice standards that improve quality and patient outcomes
  • Facilitates the delivery of the professional practice model
  • Schedules staff, including breaks, ensuring fair and adequate coverage across all shifts
  • Assist Unit Director with staff time and attendance issues, including the approval of end of shift overtime
  • Provides feedback to Unit Director regarding potential new hires
  • Communicates any unusual issues with the Unit Director
  • Balances personal needs with departmental needs and objectives
  • Coordinates with the clinical educators and preceptors to arrange for orientees/staff to attend educational activities
  • Monitor staff attendance, punctuality and overtime
  • Assists with the investigation of complaints, unusual occurrences, and RL Solutions
  • Participates on unit, department and hospital committees and projects
  • Collaborates with the clinical educator to conduct unit-based education consistent with the culture of assigned unit, e.g. disease specific or age specific in-service, posters, etc
  • Provides leadership to promote effective communication among members of the healthcare team
  • Monitors the workload on the unit, assisting staff as needed
  • Coordinates admissions, discharges, and transfers with Patient Registration and unit RN’s to ensure timely and smooth transaction to enhance patient/family satisfaction
  • Make rounds on all patients at the beginning of the shift and communicate patient care needs to the appropriate staff
  • Ensure that staff attends scheduled meetings/classes, covering patient assignments as needed
  • Monitor staff adherence to unit, hospital and regulatory policy and procedures
  • Checks that the night RN’s have performed Glucometer quality control, checked emergency carts and tested the defibrillator
  • Coordinates interdisciplinary rounds
  • Assists patients/families and physicians who have questions or complaints
  • Makes sure that patient call lights are answered promptly and courteously
  • Directs the activities of the transporter
  • Clinical Practice: Provides and coordinates direct care to patients based on the nursing process with compassion, dignity and respect. Ensures efficient, accurate and safe operation of the unit to promote staff and customer satisfaction, follows Standards of Behavior and holds staff accountable to same
  • Uses knowledge of unit operations and organizational goals to guide decisions about patient care and use of resources.
  • Utilizes patient data to develop outcome-driven plans using theoretical and experiential knowledge
  • Provides consultation to nursing staff and uses opportunities in clinical setting to teach others, either 1:1 or in groups
  • Supports innovative approaches to nursing practice, roles, and utilization of resources to meet challenging organization requirements
  • Role models and teaches cooperation, teamwork, collegiality, interdisciplinary collaboration and successful conflict resolution
  • Recognizes impact of own use of productive and non- productive time on unit resources and maintains flexibility
  • Provides leadership for problem-solving, goal formation, conflict-resolution and negotiation to maximize performance of the healthcare team
  • Seeks or willingly accepts increased responsibility, e.g. Education Liaison, PI team member, CPR Instructor
  • Consults with Physician, Case Manager or other member of the healthcare team to assure consistency with the plan of care in relation to the patient’s length of stay
  • Reviews plan of care with designated member of the healthcare team initially and changes as patient’s condition warrants; assures patient goals are achieved within agreed upon timeframe
  • Informs Physician and appropriate members of the healthcare team when there is a change in patient’s progress
  • Increases monitoring in response to warning signs and initiates preventative measures based on knowledge and experience
  • Identifies, documents and reports to appropriate personnel deviations from clinical, service or regulatory standards
  • Uses all available resources to plan care and improve professional practice
  • Complies with changes in hospital policies and procedures within designated timeframe
  • Within role of Nurse Manager, holds others accountable for their decisions, actions, and assignments and for clinical, service, regulatory and operational standards of unit and organization
  • Monitors for completion of delegated tasks; provides feedback to members of the healthcare team in a positive and respectful way as necessary to improve quality of patient care
  • Participates in staff meetings and unit activities; keeps current with departmental activities
  • Recognizes behavior of self and others that hinders achievement of departmental or organizational goals and takes appropriate action to address problem

  • Participates in providing informed consent and safeguarding the rights of patients
  • Patient Teaching/ Discharge Planning: Uses professional judgment when providing information to patients, based on the patient’s age, cultural background, cognition and clinical condition
  • Develops, implements, evaluates and modifies patient teaching plans using advanced knowledge
  • Takes initiative to collaborate with other disciplines regarding discharge planning
  • Anticipates and plans for patient’s discharge through ongoing conversations with patients and/or caregivers, active participation in multidisciplinary patient care conferences, and consulting appropriate therapeutic disciplines
  • Takes initiative to collaborate with physicians and other therapeutic disciplines in the development of patient and family teaching plan
  • Assesses patient/family learning needs according to policy and procedure, taking into consideration his/her readiness to learn and the teaching modality preference of the patient/family
  • Identifies and documents readiness to learn and barriers to patient and family education according the SAH Patient Care Standards
  • Uses patient/family readiness to learn and barriers to education to individualize standard teaching plan or develop and implement a teaching plan for immediate problems
  • Consults with Clinical Educators and other members of the healthcare team when there are complex teaching and discharge planning needs
  • Collaborates with physicians and other therapeutic disciplines in the development of patient and family teaching plan
  • Follows appropriate policy and procedure for patient discharge and assists other staff in doing the same
  • Self/Organizational Improvement: Continually strives to suggest and implement ways to improve personal, departmental and organizational performance
  • Participates in the assessment of departmental performance as it relates to desired clinical and financial goals
  • Is an active member (85% attendance) of a hospital or nursing committee and participates in all aspects of the project, such as data collection, benchmarking etc

Education: Minimum Associate’s degree from an accredited school of nursing. BSN from accredited school of nursing within 3 years of hire; MSN a plus.

Experience: Five years nursing experience preferred; previous supervisory experience preferred. For specialty areas, related experience and or certification may be required.

Certification/Licensure: Equipment/Software/Certification: MA RN license and BLS required; ACLS a plus. AACN or other nursing certification strongly preferred. Nursing and general office equipment, Meditech and Provation and data base management skills preferred.

Software/Hardware: Equipment/Software/Certification: MA RN license and BLS required; AACN or other nursing certification strongly preferred. Nursing and general office equipment, Meditech and Provation and data base management skills preferred.

Other: Other skills and abilities: Able to analyze data, synthesize and summarize information and make judgments regarding patient care and daily unit operations. Sign on Bonus Details

$10,000 Sign on bonus offered. Half at 6 months of employment, half after 12 months of employment.
