Co-Op Student, 40 HRs/Week, Day Shift (8:00AM to 4:30PM), No Weekends, No Holidays

I.          Position Function: 

Provide clinical, clerical, and administrative support to Physical and Occupational Therapists.


II.         Job Relationships: 

Supervises the following staff, by job category:

     -  Volunteers

Collaborates with the following staff, by job category:

     -  Physical Therapists

     -  Occupational Therapists

     -  Medical Staff

     -  Nursing

     -  OPD Registration

     -  Medical Records

Serves in a consultative role to the following:

     -  OPD Registration

     -  Medical Records

Supervised and/or reportable to the following, by job category:

     -  Staff Physical and Occupational Therapists

     -  Office Coordinator

     -  Outpatient Rehab Manager


III.        Authority: 

Has the authority to carry out pre-established treatment programs under the direct supervision of Physical Therapist.

Has the authority to bring patients into the department and begin set up.

Has the authority to perform monthly cleaning procedures.

Has the authority to apply superficial heat and cold modalities

Has the authority to schedule new and follow up appointments

Has the authority to collect co-pays.


IV.        A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:         

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards." 

Apply a variety of PT modalities following completion of required reading and safe demonstration of the modality to the therapist.  These modalities may include ultrasound, electric stimulation, ice massage, paraffin, hot packs and cold packs.

Supervise patients with therapeutic exercises, gait training, functional training, with the instruction and supervision of a therapist.

Assist therapist as requested or as indicated with patients.

Assist with patient reception, scheduling, clerical and maintenance as needed.

            B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:              


V.         Reporting Requirements: 

Reports informally and formally to the outpatient rehab manager, who acts as the immediate supervisor, regarding situations that require his/her attention.

Reports immediately to outpatient rehab manager any deviations in normal operations.

Reports immediately to outpatient rehab manager any unusual occurrences related to patients, other staff, self, or equipment.

Reports all incidents and breaches in the quality of care to the Manager of Rehabilitation Services and the Risk Management/Safety Department.

Reports to primary therapist, any changes in the patient's condition, or schedule, warranting intervention.   


VI.        Accountability: 

Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and Security of all hospital related, staff related, and patient related data and information.

Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including infection control.

Shall be accountable for proper patient identification by asking patient's name and date of birth.


VII.       Qualifications:

Minimum Education: 

Enrolled at Northeastern University in the physical therapy or related health science program.

Minimum Experience: 

Previous experience in a medical setting preferred.

Minimum skills/abilities:

Display courteous manner to patients, staff and other customers.

Effective communication skills.

Ability to deal with multiple supervisors, and to organize and prioritize projects with supervisors input.

Ability to deal with stress due a fast paced and growing environment.

Ability to manage within a flexible schedule

Know and identify limitations of clinical duties commensurate with education.

Ability to contact supervisor immediately in times of problems/concerns/questions relating to duties and responsibilities or any other aspect of the job.
