I. Position Function:

Process all Gynecological and Non-Gynecological specimens for the Cytology Department.

Accession of pathology specimens into computer.

Registration of patient demographic information into computer.

Print out and send to physician’s offices reports.

Prepare slides for Cytotechnologists and pathologists to read.

Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of all Cytology Laboratory Equipment.

II. Job Relationships:

Supervised and reportable to the lead cytotechnologist and pathology supervisor .

Must be able to collaborate and effectively communicate with technical staff in cytology and other laboratory departments.

Must interact with couriers, transporters, and medical staff.

III. Authority:

Has authority to contact physicians offices regarding patient demographic accuracy.

Has authority to contact physicians offices regarding specimen information accuracy.

Has the authority to verbally give information, including but not limited to, testing methods, specimen requirements, test results, etc. once data has been verified by the technical staff.

Has the authority to address initial customer complaints and/or problems related to handling and processing of specimens and reports, i.e. date and time of receipt and processing schedule of cytology specimens.

Has authority to complete and forward billing information.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."

Follows established procedures for performing routine, STAT or special tests on a variety of body fluids, sputum, etc.

Logs all required information and activities according to the laboratory manual and CAP. Maintain all records in a complete, accurate and legible manner.

Interact with couriers and transporters.

Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of all Cytology Laboratory Equipment.

Perform all required Quality Control/Quality Improvement procedures, make any corrections and document results accurately and timely.

Prepare stock and working solutions according to dilution protocol procedures.

Process all GYN material to produce pap slides.

Prepare all Non-Gyn material including:

Evaluation of initial specimen for limiting factors and adjust prep procedures to improve

quality of final product, i.e.: blood, mucus, inflammation.

Perform cell washes to optimize recovery of cellular material.

Stain, coverslip and label all GYN and Non-Gyn slides for presentation to cytologists and pathologists with the appropriate requisition forms.

Prepare cellblock material for paraffin embedding.

Follow all organizational, departmental, section and hospital policies. (e.g. Fire Safety, Hazardous Waste etc.)

Report immediately any deviation of normal operation to supervisor.

Filter and/or change staining solutions as needed.

Assist pathology administrative assistant and lead cytotechnologist as needed.

Pull slides for conferences

Put together cases for send out requests

Maintain a clutter free work environment by working neatly and efficiently and cleaning the lab as needed.

Assist with Histology laboratory preparation, filing and housekeeping as directed by the supervisor/lead

Draw off any microbiology samples

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

Collect specimens from main hospital and core lab as needed

Answer and respond to phone calls
