Diabetic RN- $37.24/hr-$77.63/hr based on Collective Bargaining Agreement with Carney MNA and years of experience.

Part Time Days 9am – 3:30pm 30 hrs/Week

Education and Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Demonstrated proficiency in acute care nursing, knowledge and skills
  • Current registration in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • CDE Certification and Diabetes experience required


  • Develops and directs the local Diabetes Care Program (DCP) to meet requirements for program accreditation by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and other regulatory agencies:
  • Assists with the annual planning and ongoing evaluation of the local DCP’s resources and effectiveness for the Network Diabetes Advisory Committee
  • Acts as a liaison between the local program staff, local DCP Medical Director, local facility Administration, Clinicians, Network Diabetes Program Manager and Network Diabetes Advisory Committee
  • Ensures all Network DCP policy and procedures are adhered to
  • Submits monthly statistics and local program activity reports
  • Assists in the development and implementation of Network DCP Continuous Quality Improvement activities
  • Assists in engagement of patients in the risk management contracts
  • Distributes bi-annual patient satisfaction surveys
  • Provides at least six diabetes support groups and two community events each year
  • Assists in the annual review and/or revision of DCP curriculum, education materials, policies and procedures
  • Assists with marketing of program
  • Orients and trains staff as needed
  • Participates in Network Diabetes Educator meetings, Network Advisory Committee meetings and other meetings as needed
  • Provides 1:1 and group Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) to patients referred to the program per ADA Education Recognition Program standards, Network DCP policies and procedures, evidence-based guidelines and referring clinician’s instructions.
  • Trains patients on use of home blood glucose monitoring and Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM). Inserts glucose sensors for professional CGM.
  • Initiates insulin administration and/or administers insulin and/or titrates insulin per DCP Insulin Titration protocol as ordered by the prescribing clinician. Occasionally administers other medications as ordered by the Endocrinologist.
  • Assesses readiness of patients wishing to initiate insulin pump therapy. Educates and supports patients on insulin pumps.
  • Inquires if patients would like referral to Registered Dietitian for Medical Nutrition Therapy. Requests orders as needed from treating physicians and assists in coordination of services.
  • Assists the primary care physician or specialist in tailoring diabetes management programs for their patients.
  • Provides age-appropriate education considering each individual’s intellectual level, cultural and religious practices, physical and psychological barriers, motivation, and readiness to learn.
  • Documents assessment, treatment plan and follow-up of patients’ progress in the medical record.
  • Communicates summary of treatment plan and self-management training to the referring clinician.
  • Enters required information on patients into the Network DCP Diabetes Registry.
  • Provides educational offerings to the general public by participating in hospital-sponsored programs.
  • Provides consultative support and training to inpatients and hospital staff as requested.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used medications: action, dose and side effects
    • Observes 5 R’s for administering meds: right patient; right drug; right dose; right method; right time
    • Demonstrates proper procedures in all methods of medication administration
    • Monitors patients’ response and intervenes appropriately
  • Demonstrates ability to use critical thinking skills in all aspects of practice.
  • Collates and integrates multiple sources of data
  • Recognizes the limits of clinical judgment and seeks interdisciplinary collaboration and consultation
  • Maintains a global grasp of situations, and utilizes nursing skills acquired through a process of integrating formal and experiential knowledge
  • Functions appropriately during medical emergencies.
  • Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure.
  • Practices within legal boundaries of nurse practice act and according to Carney Hospital policies and procedures
  • Attends continuing education programs in order to maintain licensure
  • Attends Carney Hospital sponsored skills programs as required by department.
