The network is also responsible for the implementation and execution of our managed care contracts, medical management services, quality improvement programs, data analysis, and information services.

Position Purpose: Reporting to the Chief Physician Executive, the Director of Health Equity will provide leadership, coordination, and oversight of all Health Equity initiatives nationally and across all business units within Steward Health Care Network (SHCN). This includes:

  • Responsible for the overall strategic plan for all Health Equity initiatives throughout SHCN while focusing on identifying the top health equity issues, developing strategies to address them and implementing equity metrics to evaluate performance
  • Design, implement and deliver on all MassHealth equity requirements, in collaboration with the Medicaid team, including:
    • Obtain NCQA Health Equity certification
    • Staff Steward’s Medicaid governance committee’s subcommittee on Health Equity
    • Conduct a population and community needs assessment
    • Compile data and reporting to MassHealth stratified by race and ethnicity
    • Develop and manage a plan to maximize Steward’s health equity incentive funding from MassHealth
    • Coordinate with Human Resources to design and bring in training on health equity, anti-racism, implicit bias, and other related trainings for staff, providers, and provider organizations’ staff
  • Design, implement and deliver on SHCN’s Medicare ACO REACH health equity requirements, in collaboration with the Medicare team, including:
    • Document and maintain strategic plan with CMS
    • Coordinate with data and analytics team to produce Medicare performance reports stratified by race and ethnicity
    • Facilitate compliance with any health equity-related requirements of the ACO REACH contract
  • Provide leadership and oversight for SHCN’s Blue Cross Blue Shield/Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s grant initiatives, including:
    • Coordinate with operational and business owners to design specific aims and corresponding interventions to improve health equity
    • Develop grant application(s) in support of proposed interventions
    • Manage relationship with BCBSMA/IHI during the course of grant support, including providing regular program reports, budget reports, and other documentation as needed
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that are focused on the strategic goal of improving health equity and reducing overall health disparities
  • In collaboration with leaders throughout SHCN, develop and implement strategies that advance health equity and support diverse and socially vulnerable members with the communities we serve
  • Drive change and act as the subject matter expert in all areas of health equity within SHCN
  • Provide strategic direction in creating programs, communication and education that focuses on the underlying drivers of disparities in healthcare with the goal of improving health outcomes
  • Other duties as assigned based on business needs

Education / Experience / Other Requirements


  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree in health care related field strongly preferred

Years of Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience, preferably in healthcare

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Creative, flexible, self-motivated, professional able to navigate complex, matrixed environments
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills
  • Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to present information to small and, at times, large audiences
  • Strong proven leadership and experience with the MassHealth program (i.e., FFS, PCC, MMCO, etc.); network development and ACO experience is highly valued
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact positively with a wide range of constituents
  • Strong organizational and project management skills including development of project parameters, goals, and timelines and outcome measurement
  • Analytic skills to collect information from diverse sources and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems
  • Ability to function effectively within an ever-changing environment and to meet deadlines and reprioritize as necessary
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment and a multi-dimensional environment
  • Possesses sound judgment ability to plan and initiate new activities consistent with achieving service excellence
  • Some travel may be necessary
