Summary: Plans and implements the overall nursing policies, procedures, and services for a unit. Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training clinical staff. Ensures that nurses are current in competencies, assessments, licensure, certifications, and other annual training. May provide direct patient care and is responsible for assessing, planning, and evaluating patients. Must be a registered nurse with at least 5 years of clinical experience in a related field. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Leads and directs the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Typically reports to top management.

Job Responsibilities:

Ensures that care is delivered to each patient in accordance with the PA Nurse Practice Act, Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice and SRHS Policy

  • Makes rounds daily to assess the status of the patient and the quality of the care delivered.
  • Evaluates monthly a sample of patient medical records to evaluate staff compliance with assessment/reassessment, care-plans, and evaluation of care.
  • Provides daily feedback as necessary to individual staff members regarding their performance
  • Collaborates with charge nurse/supervisors to evaluate the evening, night, and weekend staff.
  • Confers with supervisors as needed to determine quality of care issues and to resolve problems.
  • Participates in the interviewing, hiring, discipline, and termination of employees.

Ensures staff compliance with hospital/unit policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.

  • Promptly and fully investigates and responds to complaints of patients, visitors, physicians, and staff through own action or appropriate referral. Completes appropriate documentation.
  • Communicates to Director any unresolved or reportable events.
  • Interacts on a continuous basis with other departments by directing activities toward problem resolution.
  • Monitors staff participation and support
  • Ensures patients are properly prepared for OR/procedures/dialysis and problem solves system’s issues.

Participates in activities that ensures the competency of the staff

  • Conducts monthly staff meetings and unit education for all staff and documents those meetings
  • Ensures staff participation in mandatory in-service programs as evidenced by employee records
  • Ensures staff receive proper orientation prior to assuming patient care responsibilities
  • Meets weekly with orienteers to monitor their progress and maintain written documentation.
  • Performs employee performance appraisals within the HR policy requirements
  • Confers with the School of Nursing to evaluate the clinical experience for students

Participates in the Case Management Program

  • Holds staff accountable for participating in discharge planning with the case manager and / or social worker as evidenced by the documentation and length of stay
  • Assures that discharge planning is accomplished in the absence of case manager/social worker
  • Monitors patients’ LOS and communicates potential issues to the Director

Ensures proper staffing for the department

  • Schedules are appropriately completed based on the Staffing Guidelines
  • Carries out schedule changes according to Master Staffing Plan
  • Monitors staff for compliance in the areas of weekend commitments, absenteeism, tardiness and contracted hours
  • Employs progressive discipline for attendance and provides supportive documentation
  • Validates and approves employee Kronos time and attendance records according to hospital policy

Maintains accountability for fiscal management of the department

  • Monitors overtime and provides written justification as requested
  • Utilizes supplies based on par level, provides justification of variances
  • Monitors utilization of rental supplies and provides accurate documentation for expenditure
  • Provides suggestions for cost containment

Demonstrates good management techniques in established lines of authority

  • Conducts all aspects of supervision in a firm, fair and consistent manner as evidenced by employee files
  • Continually evaluates the morale of the staff and takes appropriate actions to resolve problems
  • Demonstrates an ability to identify and resolve problems, uses initiative and good judgement to reach quality decisions.
  • Demonstrates effective skills in interviewing, employee counseling and performance appraisals

Demonstrates maturity and accountability of job performance

  • Maintains calm and effective behavior during stressful situations
  • Attentive to detail, record keeping and required documentation inherent to the position
  • Demonstrates effective delegation skills
  • Completes assignments accurately and on time
  • Adheres to work schedule, adjusts schedule to meet unit needs and is punctual
