ED Secretary/Registrar performs a variety of clerical and administrative support tasks to assist with the flow of patients in the Emergency Department. They facilitate communication among staff, perform functions necessary for patient visits, registration, admissions and transfers. ED Secretary/Registrar interacts with patients & families to enable efficient patient care activities within the Emergency Department. The ability to work in a busy, stressful, fast-paced environment and to be self-directed is a must. Medical terminology and ED experience would be helpful


  • The ability to perform a wide range of standard clerical skills and work efficiently in a busy, fast paced, direct patient care area
  • Responsible for gathering all demographic and insurance data to register patients entering the emergency department and other areas of the hospital for outpatient services as well as obtaining authorization/consent signatures
  • Answers, triages, and routes telephone calls appropriately, takes messages, and prioritizes urgent patient information ensuring that the appropriate physician/staff member receive the information.
  • Prioritizes tasks adjusting to changing patient/staff needs, seeks assistance as needed from appropriate resources to aid in patient care
  • Assists and provides routine information to callers and aids in communication between patients and family members
  • Contacts on call physicians, other hospitals or facilities to obtain appropriate patient care.
  • Arranges for patient transport to other facilities.
  • Provides administrative support for physician. Prepares correspondence, forms and other documents as requested for patient care.
  • Organizes and updates patient files, charts, and records
  • Performs other clerical duties as requested
  • Assists in maintaining proper inventory of standard supplies and materials


  • 1 to 3 years of experience as a Medical Secretary preferred
  • Experience with EMR strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

A stringent cleaning policy has been implemented throughout the hospital. A strictly controlled visitor and masking policy is required for patient safety.
