The EEG Technician must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients ranging in age from infancy, throughout adolescence, adulthood and geriatrics. The EEG Technician must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s age, and interpret the appropriate information required to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and inform physician of such.

Responsibilities & Standards

  1. Perform routine, sleep deprived, portable, nasopharyngeal, ECS, O.R. and apneand MSLT testing according to the lab protocols and minimum guidelines established by ASET.

Keep Lab and surrounding work areas clean.

Check equipment to assure proper function and cleanliness with no more than 3 instances of non compliance.

Test procedures are explained to patient before patient is prepared for test.

Obtain accurate history 95-100% of the time.

Perform testing on a range of patients from pediatric adolescent, adult and geriatric populations according to guidelines using proper judgment and adapting according to the needs of the particular patient.

Interact with patients, their families and hospital staff in a courteous and professional manner.

Clean patient at completion of test.

Arrange for transportation of patient back to appropriate unit within 15 minutes of completion of test.

  1. Prepare record for physician interpretation within 10 minutes of testing 95-100% of the time.

Record all montages.

Record all sensitivity and filter settings in record.

Include all calibrations.

Include all pertinent patient information on face sheet.

Include technologists impression.

Record all EEG's in log book.

Include patients billing information for physicians.

Enter and result charges for each patient.

  1. Perform EMG/NCU testing on a range of patients from adult and geriatric populations according to established guidelines using proper judgment and adapting according to the needs of the particular patient.

Properly introduce self and others to patient 100% of the time

Explain all procedures to be performed on the patient 100% of the time.

Perform sensory nerve conduction studies according to lab policy and within guidelines established by the American Association of Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis, accurately and in a timely manner 90-95% of the time.

Perform motornerve concution studies according to lab policy and within guidelines established by the American Association of Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis, accurately and in a timely manner 90-95% of the time.

Prepare work sheets and results for physician interpretation in an accurate manner 88-92% of the time.

Assure that lab and equipment are kept clean at all times.

  1. Maintains a personable and professional appearance.

Maintains neat, well groomed appearance at all times with no more than 3 warnings per year.

Interacts well with other hospital staff patients, and their families.

Expresses willingness to accept new tasks.

Attend workshops / seminars in order to improve job performance.

Keep abreast of current trends and changes by reviewing journals, books, etc.

Accepts direction well, with no more than 3 warnings.

Function as chief technologist in their absence.

  1. Education of students - fulfill clinical responsibilities for education of CNT students from Laboure College as per college guidelines.

Educate students with regard to CNT testing.

Explain and interpret EEG tracings.

Review records and answer relevant questions.

Interact with school faculty regarding student progress in a timely manner.

  1. Assist with stock of labs.

Maintain adequate work supplies for EEG, EMG, ENG laboratories according to specified levels.

Inventory stock levels and advise chief tech as to need to reorder.

Sign for delivered stock.

  1. Storage of tracings shall be provided in accordance with lab protocols.

Separate normal from abnormal tracings.

Discard normal tracings after one month.

Box normal tracings and record in log book.

Label box in accordance with lab policy.

  1. Assist with secretarial duties when required.

Answer phones and deal with needs of caller.

Schedule patient appointments.

Assist with filing of reports.

Obtain reports and fax when necessary.
