The Financial Specialist partners with the Patient Assistance Center (PAC) and Central Business Office (CBO) to identify patients with large balances and assists Rev Ops leadership in implementing strategies to increase collections and reduce bad debt. The Financial Specialist is responsible for mastering use of applications and tools to estimate complex patient financial obligations, including copays, deductibles, and coinsurance and then meeting with patients to discuss payment options.

The position's primary responsibility is to work with patients in departments across the hospital to explain the estimates and collect payment. However, where required, the Financial Specialist may also assist patients with Medical Hardship applications, screen patients for Medicaid eligibility, and help patients navigate the Medicaid application process.


• Utilizes tools to estimate patient responsibilities including deductibles, coinsurance, and copays
• Meets in-person with patients in Emergency Room, Inpatient Floors and Outpatient Clinics to explain patient financial responsibilities and collect copays, deductibles, and coinsurance
• Follows up with patients via phone and mailings for collections post service
• Establishes secured payment plans with patients
• Provides estimates of patient responsibility for prospective Steward patients
• Maintains detailed understanding of commercial and government payer regulations
• Collects insurance information and relevant payments from International patients
• Tracks financial performance and provides regular updates to CBO and PAC
• Participates in system-wide initiatives related to bad debt improvement
• Follows up with patients for additional information as required, including visiting patients at their homes or within the community
• Screens self-pay patients, identifying opportunities for Medicaid enrollment or cash collections
• Explains requirements and benefits of Medicaid, Health Safety Net, and MA Health Connector plans to patients, and assists relevant patients with all steps of enrollment
• Assists patients in the completion of Medical Hardship applications
• Works collaboratively across Patient Access and clinical departments
• Receives and maintains Certified Application Counselor (CAC) designation
• Assists with other duties as assigned


• Advanced, hands-on experience manipulating, organizing and presenting large data sets in Excel or similar tool
• Ability to quickly learn and master new applications and tools
• Attention to detail


Education: Bachelor's degree required
Experience (Type & Length): At least 3-4 years in healthcare financial services position, including pre-registration, billing, and/or insurance verification
Software/Hardware: MS Office Suite
