Organizes the inpatient and outpatient coding activities to ensure timely and accurate coding. Monitors the discharged not finalized reports and ensures goals are met. Assigns ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 codes for both inpatient and outpatient records.


  • Responsible for assisting with the supervision of the staff including duties that involve using independent judgment to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline staff, and responsibly directing staff, and adjust staff grievances or recommend such action
  • Coordinates the day-to-day activities of Medical Record Services Coding.
  • Evaluates the amount of dollars and days in accounts receivable and ensures goals are met.
  • Serves as a resource in both ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding and reimbursement regulations/requirements relative to hospital-based coding.
  • Serves as a coding contact and resource for billing office
  • May assign ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 codes to both inpatient and outpatient records
  • Demonstrates computer and data management skills related to coding specifically Excel spreadsheets
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor or Associate degree in Health Information Administration or Technology required. After orientation, up to three month’s experience on this job is required to perform essential functions.
  • Broad knowledge in professional area and in coding and reimbursement specifically. Knowledge of regulatory, legislative and JCAHO standards related to information management.

Requires a minimum of three year’s of hospital-based coding experience or related experience in a health information management department.


Certified by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in health information administration or technology (RHIA or RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required
