POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for assisting, advocating for and educating patients, families, and staff of patients rights and how to exercise them. Ensures that all patients are afforded their human rights and are being treated with dignity and respect, receive humane and adequate care and treatment provided in a safe environment and enjoy freedom from physical, sexual, verbal, and emotional abuse.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

  • Commits to recognize and respect cultural diversity for all customers (internal and external).

  • Communicates effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.

  • Encourages and supports patients in actively participating in their treatment planning.

  • Promotes person centered care and encourages as much patient independence as possible to instill a proportionate sense of responsibility for the patient.

  • Supports patient autonomy and positive self- regard.

  • Ensures that all patients’ five fundamental human rights are being met:

  1. The right to humane psychological and physical environment.
  2. The right to be visited and visit with others daily and in private (as reasonable and safe).
  3. The right to receive or refuse visits and phone calls from attorney, legal advocate, physician, social worker, psychologist, or clergy.
  4. The right to send and receive unopened, uncensored mail.
  5. The right to reasonable access to a phone to make and receive confidential calls.

  • Participates in reviewing policies and procedures, patient handbooks, The Restraint Reduction Strategic Plan, and programming to ensure that services are recovery and wellness based as well as culturally and linguistically appropriate. Is an active participant on the Trauma Informed Committee.

  • Maintains a presence on the unit and rounds daily with patients, families, and staff.

  • Participates in treatment team meetings.

  • Reviews every patient debriefing post restraint and seclusion in a timely manner and is a supportive presence to the patient (and treatment team) during the process.

  • Reviews investigations and DMH decision letters to ensure that patients are being upheld.

  • Responds to all patient complaints in a timely manner.

  • Maintains a log of all complaints and accompanying documentation for all complaints filed.

  • Collaborates with the Patient Care Director of Psychiatry and the Director of Quality and Patient Safety to ensure that patient rights are being upheld.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Lived experience preferred
  • Good judgment and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  1. Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred
  2. Experience: Experience as a human rights officer or as direct care staff on an inpatient psychiatric service
  3. Certification/Licensure: Certified Peer Specialist preferred
  4. Software/Hardware: Microsoft Office
