TITLE: Laboratory Manager


DEPARTMENT: Laboratory


REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer



To oversee and be responsible in the clinical managerial operation of those departments comprising Clinical Services. To take a lead in the coordination of Clinical Services at Steward Carney Hospital by working with physicians and staff as needed to improve the range and marketability of services.


  • Coordinate the development and implementation of policies and procedures governing the use and availability of Clinical Lab Services.
  • To the extent directed by Administration, acts as service Manager for areas of responsibility, working with related physician groups and staff, to coordinate services, improve marketability, and provide information to physicians and broaden community awareness.
  • Globally responsible for the personnel functions of Clinical Lab Services, delegating to Supervisory staff as appropriate. These functions include, but are not limited to: hiring, terminating, disciplinary action, performance appraisals, insuring competency of staff.
  • Maintaining adequate staffing of qualified and competent individuals selection of contracted resources for required services not provided by Steward Carney Hospital, when necessary.
  • Integrates the elements of Clinical Lab Services into the organizations mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Globally responsible and delegates as appropriate the procurement of operational and capital equipment necessary to deliver services.
  • Coordinates with the Clinical Equipment Department the Preventative Maintenance Program for equipment used within the Clinical Lab Services departments.
  • Assists in the negotiations with dealers, manufacturers, and representatives in the purchase of equipment to insure the best equitable position for the organization.
  • Assures that Infection Control Procedures and Policies of the organization are carried out to protect the patients that require care from the Clinical Lab Service departments and to promote the safety of staff members assigned to those departments.
  • Assures that all services are in compliance with state, federal, and private regulatory agencies, including but not limited to, JCAHO, CAP, AABB, HCFA, and DPH.
  • Assures the opportunity for professional growth and development for staff members of clinical services through continuing education.
  • Responsible for the completion and maintenance of administrative reports and records relative to Clinical Lab Service departments.
  • Implements recommendations of both Administration and the Medical Staff insuring the highest standard of care to patients served by the Clinical Lab Services departments.
  • Globally responsible and delegates as appropriate, the continuous Quality Improvement Program of Clinical Lab Service departments, defining customer groups, identifying measures of satisfaction, measuring success, and improving processes to achieve greater success over time.
  • Responsible for the preparation of operational and capital budgets for Clinical Service departments, maintaining compliance with approved budgetary expenses.
  • Serves as a liaison between hospital Administration and Medical Staff as needed.
  • Acts independently in the daily problem-solving activities of the Clinical Lab Service departments and advises Medical and/or Administrative staff as necessary.
  • Responsible for the design and implementation of additional or new programs offered by the Clinical Lab Service departments, recommending space and other resources as appropriate.
  • Responsible as role model to supervisory and staff in team building, honest feedback, leadership, communication, and attitude.
  • Serves on committees within the organization and represents the hospital to the community, Steward Carney Hospital and outside agencies as requested.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
