Labor, Delivery and Recovery
Or the birth of your baby, we’ve prepared a private, spacious, Labor, Delivery and Recovery (LDR) suite. With an adjustable bed and reclining sleeper for your coach, our suites are designed to increase your comfort during labor. Each suite is also fully equipped to help ensure a safe delivery and outstanding medical care for the first hours of your baby’s life. If you require a Cesarean section, we also have a 5-bed surgical suite dedicated to women’s services, so you will be able to deliver your baby in an operating room located right in our maternity unit.
Signature Maternity Services - For patients and families that would like to enhance their stay with additional amenities, we offer an upgraded VIP Suite Package.
Our Labor and Delivery is a 12 bed unit on the second floor of the Women’s Building. This unit provides comprehensive care of the pregnant patient and accepts admits from the ER, direct admits, Women and Children’s Clinic, EMS and walk-in’s. We care for patients that are preterm and term. Labor and Delivery assists with vaginal or cesarean deliveries, tubals, cerclages, versions, and any pregnancy related condition requiring treatment. Some conditions that may be treated on this unit are PIH, gestational diabetes, preterm labor, and obstetrical emergencies. Labor and Delivery currently staffs at a 1:1 to 1:2 patient ratio depending on acuity. Triage is also housed on Labor and Delivery. This is the area where patients are monitored, and it is determined if they will be admitted to the hospital or discharged home.
Summary The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) position is responsible for the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care appropriate to the patient population served, including EKGs, vaccinations, health screenings, etc., as applicable and is a directed scope of practice which requires appropriate supervision of a registered nurse (RN), advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), physician assistant (PA), or physician. This position provides wellness and nursing care to patients in an organized and effective manner under the guidance and supervision of a Physician or an experienced RN. The LVN position communicates and collaborates with the physicians and interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achievement of desired treatment outcomes. This position demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, and performing procedures, acting as a patient and family advocate in order to monitor and maintain patient rights.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Service Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center. Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance. People Incorporates the patient’s physiological, psychological, cultural, developmental and spiritual needs into the plan of care. Consistently follows patient care, and facility guidelines and procedures in performance. Assigns tasks to other LVNs and unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) according to 22 TAC § 217.11(2). Collaborates with inter and intraprofessional colleagues to ensure quality outcomes. Quality: Completes annual education requirements. Maintains competency, as evidenced by completion of competency validation requirements. Promotes a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices. Uses nursing process to provide all levels of patient care. Uses professional judgment and critical thinking to prepare, prioritize, and execute the patient’s plan of care consistent with patient assessment data, physicians’ treatment plans, and professional standards of care. Implements measures to prevent exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable conditions. Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm. Promotes a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices. Follows the standards of practice as outlined in the Texas Board of Nursing LVN Scope of Practice document. Provides care for assigned patients under the supervision of an RN, advanced practitioner, or physician. Performs focused assessment regarding a patient, to recognize significant changes in a patient’s condition, and to report said data and observation of significant changes to the RN, advanced practitioner, and/or physician. Reports accurate and pertinent information related to the patient and the plan of care to appropriate persons. Reports observations, conditions and problems of patients to an RN to achieve desired outcomes. Escalates immediately to an RN and collaborates for appropriate action in emergent patient situations. Performs drug accountability and maintains inventory of related supplies in appropriate areas. Accurately documents in the electronic medical record by collecting objective and subjective data, including any populationspecific needs. Contributes to identification of improvement activities, impacting quality and safety targets, through peer-to-peer accountability, reporting near misses, etc. Supports initiatives to prevent conditions such as pressure injuries, patient falls and hospital-acquired infections. Other duties as assigned. Growth: Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments. Enhances the patient experience by fostering a positive relationship with customers. Contributes to improving patient satisfaction results. Participates in areas for innovation, efficiency and improvement in patient care or department operations using evidence-based practice literature. Embraces and enacts new care pathways or service line activity implementation to improve service to patients. Identifies own learning needs, consults with healthcare team experts and seeks continuing education opportunities to meet those needs. Pursues educational opportunities for professional growth and benefits the department through knowledge dissemination. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. Finance: Promotes stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality patient care. Displays self-motivation to independently manage time effectively, timely document care, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Licensed as a Vocational Nurse accepted by Texas State Board of Nursing. Technical, clerical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to patient care/area. Certification requirements as defined by the certification policy.
