The Medical Assistant performs a variety of direct and indirect activities in caring for the personal and comfort needs of patients according to Standards, Policies and procedures of Carney Hospital. He/she reports to the Practice Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Utilizes knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span in assisting with the treatment of patients in the Otolaryngology Department

  • Escorts patients from the waiting room into the treatment area in a courteous manner.

  • Actively participates in the clinic patient flow, informs physicians of patient’s arrival and room assignment.

  • Assists patients in transferring from wheel chair to stretcher, chair to stretcher or vise versa, as needed

  • Accurately obtains vital signs, to include height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiration. Pulse oximetry if needed. Properly import vital signs into the electronic medical record

  • Performs functions which impact and contribute to the quality of patient care as directed by the Clinical Staff, including but not limited to, providing assistance in surgical procedures in the clinic; performing allergy testing under the direct supervision of the physician; changes post-op bandages as directed by the physicians;
  • Performs EKGs, & Labs, including, UA, Urine Pregnancy, Quick strep testing, stool testing, finger sticks for blood sugars.

  • Performs or assists in the following procedures: vision and ear lavage, simple dressing changes, peak flows, nebulizer treatments, fleets enema administration.

  • Document care and services into the electronic medical record.

  • Prepares the patient and the equipment to be seen

  • Performs work to meet schedules and to facilitate quality team health care to patients.
  • Reports significant observations and patient problems to professional care givers
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients’ records and problems (HIPAA)
  • Provides and maintains a clean, orderly and safe environment
  • Attends in-service programs appropriate to clinical areas
  • Terminal cleaning, high level disinfecting of instrument/endoscope and infection control
  • Demonstrates ability to problem solve technical difficulties associated with accurately obtaining a 12 lead EKG.

  • Acts as a chaperone as requested in a courteous and respectful manner.

  • Transports patients without delay to other departments according to safety guidelines.

  • Prepares patient including dressing and undressing as appropriate, for examination or procedure.

  • Explains test procedures to patients.

  • Book all radiology tests and procedures as directed by the Provider.

  • Maintain all prior authorizations for diagnostic testing.

  • May assist with other support activities, to include packaging and sterilizing equipment and supplies

  • Performs quality control, as necessary

  • Maintain patient areas: clean and safe

  • Maintain and improve knowledge and expertise through continuous training

  • Take inventory of supplies, equipment and medication

  • Ensure clinical areas are well stocked

  • Ensure expiration dates have not lapsed.

  • Communicate problems and concerns to supervisors

  • Actively participate in team huddles and staff meetings.

  • Copying &.faxing medical records and related documents as requested

  • Provide excellent customer service by demonstrating positive behaviours towards patients, families/visitors, providers, department staff and co-workers.

  • Perform quality measure and assurance activities on patients.

  • Initiate, process and follow up on referrals/authorizations.

  • Review clinic schedules: ensure that lab and imaging results are available for provider review.

  • Attend all training classes to maintain computer skills

  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or requested.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  1. Education: High School Diploma or GED
  2. Experience (Type & Length): Experience as an ENT Medical Assistant or other patient care role within health care setting, inpatient or out patient preferred
  3. Certification/Licensure: Certified Medical Assistant, or enrolled in Nursing Program with at least one (l) semester completed preferred
  4. Software/Hardware: N/A
