JOB SUMMARY

Responsible to Trumbull Regional Medical Center for supporting the corporate mission, vision and values. Responsible to the Laboratory for transcription, filing, and retrieval of specialized medical reports utilizing the Laboratory Information System and Patient Care Information System. Responsible to the customer for courteous, accurate, timely service.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND MAJOR DUTIES

  • Transcribes specialized medical reports (surgical, cytology, autopsy, bone marrow, clinical pathology) from dictation. Create, proofreads, edits and finalizes reports for distribution.
  • Enters scans and retrieves data on patient Care System (EMR) and the Laboratory Information System.
  • Answer telephones, routes calls, places departmental calls and provides routine information to requesting physicians.
  • Performs departmental filing and record keeping including, but not limited to, surgical testing file.
  • Performs miscellaneous clerical functions including typing correspondence, technical procedures, copying of records and appointment scheduling.
  • Performs routine departmental filing, record keeping, reporting and retrieves patient demographic information for billing purposes.
  • Completes all clerical duties associated with preparing surgical history cards necessary to process surgical reports.
  • Record keeping and billing functions associated with reference lab testing, collates reports, cross checks for completeness.
  • Greets outpatients, directs patients to appropriate personnel, processes requests by physicians for laboratory tests, clarifies orders, obtains necessary demographic information for registration.
  • Orders test requests received from outpatient location. Can verify specimens and label such specimens assuring proper patient identification. Pulls slides and blocks and sends out (packaging them) for consults and testing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate or GED with related experience or training in word processing, transcription, and medical terminology. After orientation, up to six months’ experiences on this job are required to perform essential functions.
  • Previous experience in Anatomic Pathology, with office equipment, and secretarial duties preferred.
  • Broad knowledge in transcription and medical terminology. Ability to correctly spell, file, and type 55 words per minute.
