Position Summary: Medical Technologist Registered FT 36 Hours $10,000 Sign on Bonus

Job Description:

Routinely works each bench throughout the department as assigned by the department supervisor.
Performs routine analyzer maintenance and initiates troubleshooting as needed.
Verifies, calls, and documents all critical values according to hospital policy.
Reports results in a timely manner. Consistently and appropriately prioritizes STAT specimens.
Participates in and completes all competency-based testing in a timely fashion.
Uses reagents and laboratory materials efficiently and in a cost-conscious manner.
Assures optimal use of materials by rotating stock and informing others which reagents should be used first.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs moderately and highly complex testing in accordance with CLIA regulations. Functions independently as much as possible but is aware of technical limitations and knows when to seek input..
  • Plants all specimens appropriately according to departmental policies.
  • Performs all Microbiology rapid and PCR testing in an optimal time frame and reports results within established turn-around-times. Consistently and appropriately prioritizes STAT specimens.
  • Routinely and consistently performs pending and review logs. Completes hands-off communication between shifts. Resolves any issues found. Alerts microbiology management of issues.
  • Works as a team member and efficiently shares the workload appropriately so that the best possible patient care is achieved. Interacts professionally and courteously with all managers, technologists, and other hospital customers. Displays flexibility, professionalism and understanding when dealing with any situation.
  • Completes Incident reports when an incident occurs that compromises quality patient care. Completes report within the same shift that the incident occurred.
  • Removes positive blood cultures from BacT/Alert, prepares gram stains and subcultures positive bottles. Removes and reports 5 day negative blood cultures.
  • Successful participation in competency-based proficiency testing in a timely fashion. Takes initiative to perform and complete surveys.
  • Aware of proper instrument function. Operates instruments that are defined by CLIA as moderately and highly complex. Capably performs routine maintenance. Initiates troubleshooting when appropriate. Contacts clinical engineering or vendor as the situation mandates.
  • Follows quality control procedures and documents quality control in a timely fashion. Quality controls incoming reagents. Participates in performance of quarterly, biannual and/or annual quality control. Resolves and documents issues to the best of ability and then alerts microbiology management to any variance
  • Efficiently and effectively performs testing in multiple subspecialties. Each tech must be capable/competent of performing at least 6 of the following subspecialties: bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, EIA based and fluorescent serology testing, biochemical testing, sensitivity testing, rapid direct kit testing, planting/processing, amplified DNA testing, and rapid HIV testing, such testing will be specifically delineated by tech not only for this job description but also for competency testing.
  • Competently performs all of the Microbiology computer functions on both the LIS and various microbiology systems including but not limited to Vitek, BacT/Alert, Verigene/Luminex and Cepheid.
  • Efficiently and effectively performs all testing in a timely fashion. Consistently produces accurate results. Processes multiple benches in an 8-hour day. Works to ensure that all non-routine work is processed as soon as possible. Works to ensure low turn-around time for all tests.
  • Routinely performs manual tasks that are necessary for the smooth running of the department including, but not limited to, stocking media and supplies, preparation of reagents and media, monitoring inventory, and identifying needed reagents/supplies on the appropriate list.
  • Capable of staining both gram stains, trichomes and acid-fast stains.
  • Capable of running Biorad PhD EIA ANAs as well as processing slides for IFA ANAs.
  • Capable of concentrating stool specimens for parasitology testing as well as processing stools for Giardia and Cryptosporidium IFA.
  • Capable of storing all supplies and pulling and documenting products that need quality control.
  • Participates in all quality control functions, including instrument calibrations, as directed by microbiology management.
  • Meets deadlines. Delivers required quantity of work for the job. Performs the job in the most effective manner.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education: BS or AS in Medical Technology or equivalent required.
  2. Experience: 1 year or hospital laboratory experience preferred.
  3. Certification/Licensure: ASCP certification required. Eligible candidates must achieve certification within 1 year.
