Job Description


Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, assists with the nursing care of selected patients whose needs do not require complex nursing skills.  The Mental Health Associate is also responsible for performing duties necessary to maintain a safe and therapeutic milieu.


Reports to the Nurse Manager or Senior Administrative Manager


  1. BS required.  Minimum 1 year Experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  2. BLS Certification from American Heart Association required
  3. Previous experience with psychiatric patients preferred.
  4. Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent.

  6. Provides for basic hygiene care for observed patients who do not require complex nursing care.
  7. Takes TPR and BP and accurately record and reports changes to Nurse.
  8. Demonstrates knowledge of fire safety, smoking and visitor policies.
  9. Participates in Code Yellow.
  10. Demonstrates efficiency in prioritizing patient assignments.
  11. Responds promptly and appropriately to crisis or emergency situations.  Defuses situations and summons assistance, as necessary.
  12. Engages patients in leisure or recreational activities, as appropriate.
  13. Assumes responsibility for conducting milieu groups, as appropriate.
  14. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  15. Recognizes own limitations and seeks help from appropriate resources, as needed.
  16. Reviews patient status with Registered Nurses and other disciplines when appropriate.
  17. Communicates clearly any changes in patient status promptly to Registered Nurse.
  18. Follows policy regarding proper search.
  19. Maintains checks, as assigned.
  20. Follows sharps policy.
  21. Provides appropriate documentation as needed.  When on an assigned 1:1, records observation on sheet and gives verbal report to the oncoming staff.
  22. Assist patients to recognize and develop positive coping skills to help them manage physical and emotional stress.
  23. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
