Family Birth Center

Our Family Birth Center cares for well newborns, mother’s, and gynecological patients. This unit is comprised of the 3rd and 4th floor in the Women’s Building, and accepts admissions from Labor and Delivery, Women’s OR, direct admits, Main OR and ER. There are 28 beds on the 3rd floor and 20 beds on the 4th floor, as well as our VIP rooms. The newborn nursery is staffed at all times with 2 RN’s, and the Postpartum unit staffs at a 1:3 couplet ratio. Family Birth Center provides couplet care for all healthy mothers and infants. It also houses the newborn nursery where comprehensive newborn care can be provided. Procedures such as circumcisions are also performed in the nursery. The newborn nursery also monitors infants that may be having difficulty, but do not meet the criteria for NICU. If NICU is warranted a transfer will be placed from the newborn nursery. Staff from the newborn nursery also assist in transitioning infants in the Labor and Delivery Unit. Family Birth Center also cares for women pre-surgery and post-surgery with gynecological needs. This unit receives admissions from Labor and Delivery and Women’s OR.

Has 24-hour accountability for the quality and efficiency of the department’s nursing care. Responsible for maintaining staffing within the productivity standard and when variances occur he/she investigates contributing factors. Is responsible for the performance improvement planning and monitoring for the department.

Adheres to all Steward Healthcare policies on Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI) Participates as a productive member of the Nursing Services leadership team. Serves as a change agent, assisting staff in understanding the importance, necessity, impact, and process of change. People Collaborates with inter and intraprofessional colleagues to ensure quality outcomes. Maintains visibility and open communication within the facility. Assesses, addresses, records and tracks staff competence. Fosters a proactive vs. reactive approach to problem identification and resolution. Actively participates on committees and task forces to meet goals. Promotes staff retention. Provides staff performance feedback to director Ensures personnel management is consistent with state and federal laws and facility policy and procedure. Utilizes progressive disciplinary action process to address staff performance and behavior issues in a timely manner.


Licensed as a Registered Nurse accepted by Texas State Board of Nursing to engage in professional nursing Four or more years of practice experience in a healthcare setting. Comprehensive knowledge of nursing procedures, processes, and acute care organizations. Technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to effectively and work collaboratively with the leadership team and staff. Certification requirements as defined by the certification policy. Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Adept using Microsoft Office, online applications
