Pathology Tech – Lab Pathology – Per Diem

I. Position Function:

Perform a variety of functions for the Pathology Department within the morgue, frozen section room and anatomic pathology laboratories.

Assist with projects to maintain overall workflow within Pathology Department.

II. Job Relationships:

Reports to Senior Pathology Assistant, Assistant Manager

Daily work overseen by Senior Pathology Assistant.

Must be able to collaborate and effectively communicate with technical staff in Cytology, Histology and other laboratory departments.

Receives guidance from medical consultants.

Must interact with funeral home personnel, couriers, transporters, medical staff, patient and their families.

III. Authority:

To check and obtain all necessary paperwork, authorizations and/or data related to performing autopsies.

Has the authority to contact physicians offices regarding patient demographic accuracy.

Has the authority to contact physicians offices regarding specimen information accuracy.

Has the authority to address initial customer complaints and/or problems related to handling and processing of specimens and reports, i.e. date and time of receipt and processing schedule of specimens.

Has the authority to complete and forward billing information.

Has the authority to contact funeral homes.

Has the authority to contact Biomedical Engineering regarding equipment issues.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards.

Pick up specimens and deliver to the laboratory.

Registration of patient demographic information into computer.

Accession of specimens into Meditech and CoPath computer systems, make two copies of requisition to be forwarded to Pathology Office.

Print surgical cassettes with two identifiers for the PAs as needed.

Perform diversified mortuary duties, including setting up and preparing bodies for autopsy.

Assist prosector in dissection of the body. Restore and clean body, instruments and work areas.

Responsible for details related to disposal of body.

Assist with the dissection of organs and tissues collected from the autopsy.

Assist prosector as needed with setting up and performing the gross dissection of surgical, autopsy and frozen section specimens.

Gross muscle biopsies.

Gross small surgical specimens as needed.

Logs all required information and activities according to the laboratory manual. Maintain all records in a complete, accurate and legible manner.

Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of all Pathology Laboratory Equipment.

Perform all required Quality Control/Quality Improvement procedures, make any corrections and document results accurately and timely.

Operate recycling instrument, performing proper alcohol dilutions.

Dispose of specimens as needed.

Assist with Histology and Cytology Laboratory filing and housekeeping as directed by Assistant Manager and or Supervisor.

Dispose of hazardous waste in safe and proper manner.

Insure adequate inventory of supplies appropriate for test volume, restock supplies when delivered.

Performs routine maintenance on all Pathology equipment according to manufacturers specifications.

Keep current on new technologies, procedures and methodologies that may enhance patient care and/or increase efficiency in the laboratory.

Follow all organizational, departmental, section and hospital policies. (e.g. Fire Safety, Hazardous Waste etc.)

Meets departmental time frame of inspection readiness at all times. Insures ongoing compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies including, but not limited to JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, DPH, HCFA, NCCLS, CLIA, and HIPPA.

Conduct self in a professional manner at all times (apparel, telephone conversation, staff/peer interaction, etc.)

Maintain a clutter free work environment by working neatly and efficiently and cleaning the lab as needed.

Strives for continuous improvements in service and quality.

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

Participate in technical support for physicians and research groups.

Assist Assistant Manager and Supervisor with special projects.

V. Reporting Requirements:

Reports immediately to Assistant Manager, Supervisor any deviation of normal operation or unusual occurrences related to the laboratory.

Report to pathologists any suspicious results uncovered during autopsies and dissections immediately.

Aids in reporting turn-around-time for autopsy specimens.

VI. Accountability:

Accountable for accurate dissection, description and processing of grossed tissue.

Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital, medical staff and/or patient related data and information.

Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital and procedures including infection control policies and procedures.

Shall be accountable for accurately accessioning and labeling specimens.

Shall be accountable for the timely completion of all preventive maintenance and QC records.

Shall be accountable for meeting production expectations as indicated by the Assistant Manager and Supervisor.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

Associate Degree in Science related field.

Minimum Experience:

One year in a pathology laboratory performing routine laboratory functions or equivalent.

Minimum skills/abilities:

Must be able to stand for most of the day.

Demonstrate autopsy skills.

Ability to follow Infection Control Procedures when dealing with highly contagious post mortem examinations.

Follow written and oral instructions to be able to carry out laboratory procedures.

Must have the capacity to understand biohazards and the risks associated with them.
