TITLE: Patient Care/Endoscopy Technician

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the RN, the Patient Care Technician/Endoscopy Technician is responsible for assisting with the care and safety of the patient in the endoscopy suite and providing direct patient care pre and post operatively . Other duties include assisting the physician with endoscopy procedures and reprocessing of endoscopy equipment. He/She is responsible for performing a range of support activities that contribute to the overall efficiency of the endoscopy unit, Preop and PACU areas. Work involves maintaining inventory of supplies, disassembling, cleaning of working environment, high level disinfection, reprocessing and reassembling of endoscopy equipment. PACU and Pre-op duties include, but are not limited to vital signs, transferring patients, assisting patients with getting dressed, performing preoperative preps and scrubs, cleaning stretchers and bays, data entry and assisting the registered nurse.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

1. Commits to recognize and respect cultural diversity for all customers (internal and external).

2. Communicates effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.

  • Assists physician with endoscopy procedure
  • Cleaning of endoscopes: High level disinfection
  • Processes all instruments and equipment for Endoscopy according to manufucterer’s recommendations
  • Updates and maintains IFU’s related to endoscopy equipment and instrumentation
  • Performs specimen handling
  • Performs documentation and logs related to sterilization including temperature and humidity logs, eye wash log, and instrument/equipment repair log
  • Assists with admission , discharge and transfer of patients
  • Assists patients in getting dressed
  • Cleans stretchers and pre & Post-op bays
  • Point of Care testing-UCG and finger stick glucose

Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Ability to assist physician in all endoscopic procedures
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique, infection control principles, high level disinfection, equipment and supply processing.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and is self motivated
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills-ability to put patients at ease.
  • Knowledge of Spauling Classification
  • Knowledge of Universal Protocol
  • Knowledge of AORN Standards and Recommended Practices
  • Knowledge of AAMI Guidelines
  • Ability to prioritize equipment needs of the endoscopy suite
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  1. Education: High School Diploma or GED
  2. Experience (Type & Length): 1 – 5 years on the job training preferred
  3. Certification/Licensure:, BLS required
  4. Software/Hardware: Meditech, Provation,Athena
