POSITION SUMMARY:

Academic position – under the supervision of the Director of the Pharmacy Practice Residency Program, participates with patients, medical staff, and health care practitioners in the further development of those skills necessary for the provision of effective, safe, and appropriate drug therapy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Note: As the PGY1 residency is a year-long experience, many of the responsibilities listed below will evolve in scope over the year.

  1. Identifies the residency program as the primary professional commitment.
  2. Participates in experiential pharmacy practice rotations comprising core and elective rotations.
  3. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in the pharmacy practice rotations.
  4. Develops and exercises leadership and practice management skills.
  5. Conducts pharmacy practice research and presents results in an appropriate venue.
  6. Provides medication and practice-related education/training.
  7. Provides drug information to health care professionals and/or the public.
  8. Assists with precepting experiential education students from Schools of Pharmacy.
  9. Assists in managing and improving the medication-use process.
  10. Assists in formulary activities as needed for Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  11. Participates in performance improvement activities using evidence-based practice.
  12. Provides pharmacy consultation as requested.
  13. Assists in the development and implementation of Steward initiatives (therapeutic interchange, renal dosing, ADR reporting) with regard to efficacy, safety, and cost effectiveness.
  14. Participates in the Drug Utilization Evaluation program and Quality Improvement projects.
  15. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of patient right to confidentiality.
  16. Maintains a safe and secure environment.
  17. Maintains records required by hospital and department policies, federal, state, and local regulations.
  18. Satisfies staffing requirements of ASHP-accredited PGY1 residencies:
  1. Reviews, processes and monitors patient medication orders to evaluate the appropriateness of use, dosage form, route of administration, regiment compliance, therapeutic duplication, drug interactions, adverse reactions and age appropriateness.
  2. Checks technician prepared or otherwise prepares for dispensing all medications for patient specific use.
  1. Performs other duties and participates in other experiences as assigned by the Director of the Pharmacy Practice Residency Program.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Good organizational and communication skills required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  1. Education: Graduate of accredited School of Pharmacy. Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree required.

  3. Certification/Licensure: Licensed pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
