Our Haverhill campus offers all private rooms, and our Methuen campus offers a new state-of-the-art catheterization suite and Joint Center of Excellence named as a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction+ Center for Knee and Hip Replacement.

Position Summary: Pulmonary Function Technologist Full Time 40 Hours

Essential Functions:

  • Provides aerosolized bronchodilator, steroid, mucolytic, and antibiotic medications to adult and geriatric patient populations via hand nebulizer. Evaluates appropriateness and effectiveness of procedures. Explains benefits and possible side effects to patients and/or family members.
  • Provides all recognized forms of oxygen therapy and aerosol therapy to the adult and geriatric patient populations. Evaluates appropriateness and effectiveness of therapy. Explains benefits and possible side effects to patients and/or family members.
  • Performs oximetry testing, to include spot checks and rest and exercise.
  • Performs arterial blood gas punctures according to established protocol. Recognizes critical values and communicates such to appropriate parties.
  • Instructs patients, or family members, in all forms of education, including asthma education, smoking cessation, metered dose inhalers, and peak flow, and cardiac and or pulmonary disease processes. Understands cognitive limitations and accesses appropriate resources (interpreter or parent/guardian).
  • Utilizes the appropriate self-inflating bag in accordance to BLS and ACLS guidelines to maintain ventilation and oxygenation of an unconscious patient.
  • Documents all therapy and education given in the appropriate area of the patient’s medical record and enters all charges, according to established policy. Accesses the EMR when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates judicious and conscientious use of equipment and supplies. Tracks equipment and returns to the department when not in use. Participates in the replenishing of oxygen cylinders in the appropriate locations throughout the hospital.
  • Changes disposable equipment as according to policy. Cleans large items (PFT equipment, etc.) according to established protocol. Properly assembles equipment post-cleaning. Delivers items to CSR that require sterilization and picks up items ready for return to department.
  • Establishes and maintains effective and supportive relationships with patients and their families.
  • Fosters a good working relationship with patients, physicians, staff, other departments, and assists in promoting the program and recruiting new patients.
  • Implements nationally recognized and acceptable guidelines for best practice in pulmonary function testing and pulmonary rehabilitation.
  • Performs initial patient evaluation, oversees skilled pulmonary testing or treatment directed toward patient-specific goals, and refers patients to appropriate interdisciplinary team members for specific evaluations.
  • Adheres to specific guidelines (clinical, administrative, educational, safety, infections control, and patient advocacy) and works in close collaboration with the pulmonary manager and medical director.
  • Properly assembles equipment post-disinfecting and delivers and procures re-useable items to/from Central Sterile Department for sterilization. Adheres to infection control guidelines in using personal protective equipment and hand washing when dealing with soiled materials and body fluids

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education: Degree from an AMA approved program in respiratory therapy
  2. Experience: - Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist in PFT lab
  3. Certification/Licensure: RRT License in respiratory therapy by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. BLS by the AHA or Red Cross required.
