The Regional Director, Emergency Medicine Operations will work in a matrix structure establishing a vision and a road map within the assigned region for creating clinical effectiveness, competencies, capacity management, facility design and management of projects, integration of new hospitals, and creating synergies within Emergency Medicine.

The Regional Director will report directly to the Vice President, Emergency Medicine Operations (VPEMO). The Regional Director will work directly with ED leadership at assigned sites – and collaborate with each hospital’s Senior Leadership team – including but not limited to the Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Quality Director and others as needed. This position is based in Houston, TX or at another Steward hospital within the Texas market.

The Regional Director is an important member of the enterprise emergency leadership team. As such, this individual works closely with the Corporate Quality and Safety leadership team under the direction of the VPEMO and participates in system leadership activities, clinical quality improvement, EM strategic planning, EM clinical integration, departmental budgeting, policy development, and priority setting for the regional EM leadership team. The Regional Director will also participate in the Education Enterprise Group as assigned by the VPEMO and will carry out the mission and vision of Steward Health Care and established values of business conduct with respect to employee relations. The Regional Director assumes responsibility for the effective execution, development, and evaluation of the services in the Emergency Department service line within the assigned region in accordance with the overall organizational mission of seeking out the best people and providing the best patient experience.


  • Assists in planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing patient care and non-patient care functions within Emergency Services Line.
  • Develops short- and long-term goals and objectives in consultation with VPEMO, administration and consistent with Hospital philosophy.
  • Monitors compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and hospital policy for patient services, and environmental and personnel safety.
  • Is responsible for department’s operational excellence; assures Emergency Services delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
  • Participates in a QI program which consistently monitors and evaluates critical aspects of care, including clinical quality portion of MIPS.
  • Support new program strategies and/or program enhancements which would expand ED patient services.
  • Provides consultation, counsel, and guidance to key personnel (i.e., Managers and Supervisors) facilitates the development of their problem-solving skills, and encourages participation in developing department objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Investigates new program or service opportunities and supports business plans for same; implements new programs that contribute to the Hospital’s margin under direction of the VPEMO.
  • Monitors assigned budget expenditures as reflected in accurate, objective variance analysis.
  • Effectively communicates departmental, organization, and industry information to staff.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
  • Serves as Steward Health Care’s Regional Emergency Services nursing leader in communicating the health system’s service to patients in clinical partnership with physicians by providing world-class nursing care throughout the health system.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of assigned departments/unit team, inter- and intra- departmentally, to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Fosters a service which is consistent with the patient care beliefs and Shared Governance philosophy of the Hospital.
  • Actively participates in service, departmental, and system-wide committees as assigned.
  • Interprets/represents the practice and role of the Nursing Department to allied health professionals and physicians effectively.
  • Involved in recruitment, onboarding, support, and development of Emergency Department Nurse Leaders.
  • Travel will be required, as needed.

First Year Expectations:

  • Establish a foundation for trust and credibility with the SVP of Hospital Based Services, VPEMO and other Senior Leadership of assigned hospitals.
  • Develop positive, effective working relationships with nursing staff, physicians, and support staff within each assigned Emergency Department in order to create an interdisciplinary, collaborative clinical environment throughout the System.
  • Work and support to advance key system hospital initiatives including Customer Service Excellence, Shared Governance, and patient flow.
  • Assess and improve operational efficiency and effectiveness to support continuing performance improvement within each Emergency Department.
  • Provide nursing leadership in the successful utilization of electronic medical record within each assigned Emergency Department.
  • Provide nursing leadership in facilities planning activities relative to each assigned Emergency Department.

  • Education: An R.N., preferably with an advanced degree in nursing (i.e., M.S.N. or Ph.D.) or in management (i.e., M.B.A. or M.H.A.)
  • Experience: Progressive administrative experience, preferably at a Director level within an integrated healthcare environment. Must have prior experience in an Emergency Department service line.
