Transfusion Services and Blood Management Specialist.

Position Summary:

  • Serves as the regional Blood Management Subject Expert (SME). Oversees administrative and technical operation of the Blood Banks in conjunction with the laboratory site management.
  • As an integral part of the laboratory management team works collaboratively with all members of the department to ensure fulfillment of the department mission.
  • The Blood Bank Supervisor accepts mutual accountability for the success of all the hospitals Transfusion Service department and strives for continuous improvement in services
  • Maintains the technical "quality" of the transfusion Service. Works successfully with the site managers

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Blood Bank Supervisor accepts mutual accountability for the success of the department and strives for continuous improvement in services for all regional Steward sites.
  • Effectively coordinates activities with guidance from the Laboratory Directors
  • Supervises, by job category; Medical Technologist / Blood Bank staff, in the performance of their technical duties.
  • Monitors performance of Transfusion Service procedures for quality, reporting information, statistics, errors, incidents, accidents, and audits to the appropriate Quality Assurance forums.
  • Assures compliance with regulatory agencies including but not limited to JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, DPH, HCFA, American Association of Blood Banks, NCCLS, CLIA. Always meets department standard of inspection readiness. Can successfully explain to inspectors how the Transfusion Service complies with standards and regulations.
  • Maintains the donor data base and serves as an authority on the Blood Bank computer system.
  • Works with and monitors performance of blood supplier and usage of blood supply.
  • Manages the Blood Bank budget and ensures that financial targets are met.
  • Assesses competence of Transfusion Service staff and certifies their adherence to continuing education requirements.
  • Generates or supervises the Internal Quality Assurance program.
  • Reviews Quality Control and CAP surveys.
  • Assesses performance of all Blood Bank staff annually.
  • Maintains technical competency in Blood Bank
  • Is responsible for monitoring quality control and preventative maintenance.
  • Coordinates with directors for maintaining appropriate levels of staffing.
  • Coordinates scheduling staff and distributes workload as necessary to meet clinician demand in collaboration with directors.
  • Participates in department inspections including CAP, JCAHO, AABB and FDA
  • Works collaboratively with the Supervisors of Microbiology, Core lab, Lab Support, Pathology Department, and other hospital departments
  • Collaborates and effectively communicates with physicians and other health care professionals
  • Accepts full responsibility for the technical oversight of Transfusion Service functions
  • Is accountable for maintaining blood product costs within budget.
  • Is responsible for maintaining confidentiality of hospital-related, patient-related and medical staff-related data and information.
  • Is accountable for abiding by all applicable hospital policies and procedures.
  • Is responsible for maintaining appropriate levels of supplies.
  • Is responsible for maintaining a high level of work performance.
  • Is a member of the Transfusion Committees.
  • Coordinateness recall notification information/letters for laboratory directors.
  • Provides appropriate orientation to new employees and current employees on new procedures on a timely basis.
  • Understands and adheres to Stewards compliance standards and policies as they appear in Corporate Compliance Program, Code of Conduct and Business Ethics; sponsors and implements initiatives to achieve the System's compliance goals.
  • Is familiar with all hospital policies that effect the smooth functioning of the section (payroll, purchasing, maintenance, etc.
  • Follows organization and departmental policies regarding safety, record keeping, and regulatory requirements, to provide for the quality care of patients.
  • Always conducts self in a professional manner.
  • Problem solves in a timely and diplomatic manner. Consistently presents options for resolving issues when discussing situations with Director.
  • Conducts a minimum of 10 departmental staff meetings per year. Documents minutes in a timely fashion, sending a copy to the Director.
  • Supervises CAP surveys, with equal distribution to all shifts. Evaluates discrepant results and responds appropriately.
  • Develops and implements quality improvement activities within the department, completing semiannual reports for the Directors.
  • Assists the Directors in planning and development of the operational and capital budget. Manages the department(s) operational budget and records variances as requested.
  • Acts as a Blood Bank technical resource for medical, nursing, and other staff.
  • Ensures adequate inventory of supplies and maintenance of equipment.
  • Attends or participates in appropriate hospital and departmental meetings.
  • Attends or participates in conventions, seminars, etc. when feasible.
  • Performs all routine and special procedures in section.
  • Responds to and supervises testing of adverse reactions to blood products and consults with Transfusion Service physicians.

  • Required Education/Licensing:
    Completion of academic studies which meet the requirements of a Bachelor's degree in Medical
    Technology, or one of the physical, chemical or biological sciences, or the equivalent academic studies.
    (2 yrs in a Community College) with subsequent pertinent clinical rotation in an approved laboratory.
    State of Florida Supervisor's License in at least 3 specialties. - Required
    State of Florida Supervisor's License in all 5 specialties. - Preferred
    G. Required Work Related Experience:
    At least 5 years experience as medical technologist required.
    At least 2 years experience as a Section Supervisor preferred.
