Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse utilizes all aspects of the Nursing Process in the perioperative setting with an emphasis in the recovery phase. Policies/procedures as well as the AORN and ASPN standards govern their practices. The nurses care for all patients requiring recovery from different types of anesthesia and assist with the line placement in the preoperative phase, while keeping patient satisfaction in mind. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Application of all aspects of the nursing process.
  • Performs post-operative patient assessment
  • Maintains patient safety.
  • Maintains infection control.
  • Proficient at peripheral IV insertions.
  • Assesses physiological/psychological status of patient (age specific).
  • • Demonstrates ability to recognize verbal/nonverbal needs of PACU patients and treat accordingly.
  • • Demonstrates ability to interpret patient response on emergence from anesthesia.
  • • Maintains patient comfort.
  • Always promote patient safety.
  • Assists anesthesia with procedures (i.e., line placement).
  • Administer IV sedation if requested.
  • Monitor patients according to IV moderate sedation policy
  • Assists the anesthesia provider with insertion of an invasive line prior to surgery and post-op when necessary.

Departmental responsibilities:

  • Maintains department flow.
  • Maintains patient and employee safety
  • Effectively communicate with other nursing and multidisciplinary departments.
  • Allows for parents to visit pediatric patients
  • Recognize clinical abnormalities, communicate with the anesthesiologist and surgeon
  • Maintains working knowledge of hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Administers medications and IV solutions according to hospital policy.
  • Implements post-surgical treatment plan and provides detailed report/communication to receiving nurse for patient transfer/admission

Requirements:

  • PA – RN License
  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing - BSN Preferred
  • 2 years Critical Care or PACU experience
  • CPR/BLS by AHA within 90 days of hire
  • ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire
  • Clearances as required by Federal and State law
