Respiratory Care Service Aide II, Per Diem

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Under the direction of the Director of Respiratory and Diagnostic Services, the Respiratory Care Service Aide performs varied routine duties con­sisting of patient care and general maintenance of department equipment.

REQUIREMENTS

§ Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Card

§ Meets one of the two licensing requirements:

1. Limited Permit to Practice Respiratory Care issued by The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Respiratory Care Licensure Board

2. License to Practice Respiratory Care as issued by The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Respiratory Care Licensure Board with a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential from the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)

DUTIES:

1.

1. Performs EKG’s

2. Hand Held Nebulizer medication delivery

3. Performs tracheal suctioning of patients

4. Assist therapists on patient care units as needed

5. Perform routine ventilator checks on mechanically ventilated patients

6. Performs routine ventilator weaning

7. Assists in routine Trach Tube changes under the supervision of a Respiratory Therapist I

8. Performs arterial punctures under the supervision of a Respiratory Therapist I

9. Performs diagnostic laboratory testing under the supervision of a Respiratory Therapist I

10. Cleans and sets up respiratory care equipment

11. Performs all equipment testing prior to putting equipment into service (i.e., Ventilator SST and UVT)

12. Stocks respiratory care supplies on the inpatient care units

13. Stocks respiratory care supplies and equipment in the Respiratory Care Department

14. Notifies appropriate staff members when supplies and equipment need to be ordered

15. Stocks oxygen cylinders on patient care units

16. Cleans, packages, and ships bronchoscopes

17. Performs Chest Physiotherapy

18. Performs other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Lifts, boosts, turns, or transfers patients weighing up to approximately 300 pounds in and out of bed, vehicle, wheelchair, toilet or tub/shower an average of 15 times per shift, with assist as needed.

2. Frequently (15+ times per shift) lifts and carries supplies and equipment up to approximately 20 lbs.

3. Frequently (25+ times per shift) twists, bends, reaches, stoops, pushes and pulls.

4. Intermittent sitting, kneeling, half-kneeling, standing and walking.

5. Stair ascending and descending up to 10 times per shift.

6. Visual ability to observe equipment settings, functional performance, read medical records.

7. Hand dexterity to palpate arteries for blood gas performance, manipulate therapy devices, and to set up equipment and demonstrate fine motor skills.
