Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
The Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and influencing department activities and the delivery of patient care. The Director must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the ages of the patients served on his or her assigned units. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the patient and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the units policies and procedures and skills check lists. Must be able to respect diversity of each individual’s values, culture, spiritual beliefs, and other socio-economic issues in addressing the needs of patients, visitors, and co-workers. The Director maintains operations within budgetary parameters. Effectively interacts with patients, significant others, physicians, and other health team members while maintaining professional nursing standards. Ensures that care is of the best quality, is cost contained, and is carried out in an expeditious manner. Manages staff members in the Emergency Department. Consults with staff, physicians and Chief Clinical Officer on nursing problems and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met. Maintains and participates in hospital and department performance improvement activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
- Manages and directs the department's administrative and financial functions.
- Prepares and is accountable for department's operating budgets and capital budget.
- "Addresses complaints regarding department functions and works with other directors and staff to resolve complaints."
- Is able to function as Registered Nurse and provide care based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
- Has a knowledge of the required elements and their role in providing care to the stroke patient.
- Demonstrates an ability to provide care and is able to formulate a plan of care specific to the needs of the stroke patient.

- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, and administrative team.
- Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and hospital policy is followed.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments. Communicates with other department managers for improved decision making.
- Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.
- Attends and participates in management and other hospital and regional meetings, as appropriate.
- Maintains established hospital and department policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Actively supports and maintains the department's Performance Improvement Activities; safety, education, environmental, and infection control.
- Assures compliance with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
- Assists with the care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
- Is responsible for the preparation of reports, payroll records, and other statistical data as required.
- Is responsible for the orientation and education of department staff, providing role clarification, counseling when necessary, and completing annual performance evaluations when due."
- Is able to delegate as required.
- Performs management activities including interviewing, hiring , counseling, and terminating.
- Maintains a fair, sensitive, and impartial approach to dealing with employees.
- Appropriately handles and administers controlled substances including timely resolution of discrepancies.
- Assures confidentiality of hospital and patient records.
- Is able to identify and apply the principles of National Patient Safety Goals.
- Is able to identify the hospital core measures and how they apply to the Emergency Department.
- Respects diversity of each individual (patients, visitors, vendors, co-workers).
- Consistently strives to promote customer service in all aspects of job
- Performs leadership rounding at least three “3” times per week
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Adheres to hospital and department dress code, appearance is neat and clean. Is conscientious in regard to personal hygiene.
Completes annual educational requirements.

Maintains regulatory requirements.

- Texas State RN licensure
Reports to work as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
Wears identification while on duty.
Participates in community activities and professional organizations and pursues continuing education. Is able to deal constructively with stress and act as an agent for change and improvement.
Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the Medical Center and the Emergency Department.
Attends committee and management meetings as appropriate.
Participates in at least 8 hours a year department, hospital, and/or job related education.
REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing, and possess a current Texas State RN license, and current BLS, CPI, TNCC, and ACLS Certifications.
- Must have at least 5 years clinical nursing experience with at least 2 years experience in the management of operations and budgets preferred, or the ability to learn and demonstrate proficiency after successful completion of a training program.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Must be able to read, understand and communicate effectively in English; additional languages helpful.
- Strong written and verbal skills
SKILLS:
- Good computer skills with knowledge of various software applications.

- Position is classified as OSHA Category I where regular job duties have continuous potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens throughout the day.
