Position Summary

General Summary: The registered nurse (RN) in the Geriatric Psych unit assumes full and ultimate responsibility for the quality of nursing care she/he provides to the individuals and groups. Including in such responsibility is health maintenance, teaching, counseling, collaborative planning and restoration of optimal functioning and comfort or for the dignified death of those you serve. The RN, within the parameters of his/her generic and continued education and experience, may delegate nursing activities to other RN’s and/or health care personnel, provided that the delegating RN bear full and ultimate responsibility for:

  1. Making an appropriate assignment
  2. Properly and adequate teaching, directing and supervising the delegate
  3. The outcomes of that delegation.

The RN provides care that addresses the specific needs of a geriatric psychiatric patient population, and also individualized to a variety of special needs specific to impairments such as hearing, sight, substance abuse, non-English speaking and potential victims of abuse. The RN incorporates knowledge and understanding of our commitment to the patient rights, our mission, vision and values into nursing practice at GSMC.

She/He must incorporate knowledge and understanding of our commitment to patient rights, our mission, vision and values into her/his nursing practice and in accordance with the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.

Experience: adult geri-psychiatric experience preferred

Education: Graduate of an approved school of nursing.

Certification/License Requirements: Valid Massachusetts RN license, current BLS certification

Supervisory Responsibility: RN’s, ancillary staff. With the definition of supervision being: Provision of guidance by a qualified licensed nurse for the accomplishment of a nursing task or activity with initial direction of the task or activity and periodic inspection of the actual act of accomplishing the task or activity.
