Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

As the first Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) unit in Houston, we provide highly qualified trained nurses and respiratory therapists to support a board-certified neonatologist in meeting the special needs of newborns and premature infants. Our 36-bed Level II & III NICU unit is equipped with advanced incubation and monitoring equipment to provide a range of critical care services for these fragile newborns. Our ratio is 1:4 for level 2 infants and 1:2 for level 3 infants. We provide comprehensive care to our smallest patients. The NICU team attends all cesarean deliveries, complicated vaginal deliveries, and any deliveries of infants that will need support after delivery. This is an invaluable service and is located on the 1^st floor of the Women’s Building.

Summary:

Accountable for the observation, assessment, intervention, evaluation, rehabilitation, or health teachings of a person who is ill, injured, infirm, or experiencing a change in normal health processes; the maintenance of health or prevention of illness; the administration of a medication or treatment as ordered by a physician, the supervision or teaching of nursing; the administration, supervision, and evaluation of nursing practices, policies, and procedures; the performance of an act delegated by a physician and the development of the nursing care plan.

Quality:

Completes annual education requirements. Maintains competency, as evidenced by completion of competency validation requirements. Promotes of a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices. Uses nursing process to provide all levels of patient care.

Uses professional judgment and critical thinking to prepare, prioritize, and execute the patient’s plan of care consistent with patient assessment data, physicians’ treatment plans, and professional standards of care. Implements measures to prevent exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable conditions. Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm.

Listen to and honor patient and family perspectives and choices. Acknowledge the patient’s and family’s knowledge, values, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds to ensure they are incorporated into the planning and delivery of care.

Communicate and share complete and unbiased information with the patients and families in ways that are affirming and useful.

Ensure that patients and families receive timely, complete, and accurate information to effectively participate in care and decision making.

Encourage and support patients and families in participating in care and decision making at the level they choose.

Collaborate with patients, families, healthcare practitioners, and healthcare leaders in policy and program development, implementation and evaluation in facility design, in professional education, as well as delivery of care.

Understands that a solution may create a “new way of doing things” that is not how it has always been done, but is the right thing to do. Takes ownership of a patient safety related issue and openly acknowledges an ongoing problem requiring attention. Affirms that decisions made that will impact families and direct patient care requires patient and family representation as part of the multidisciplinary approach. Encourage the concept that “just culture” should prevail. Other duties as assigned.

.MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Licensed as a Registered Nurse accepted by Texas State Board of Nursing to engage in professional nursing.

Technical, clerical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to patient care/area.Certification requirements as defined by the certification policy.

Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

PREFERRED

Baccalaureate degree or progression to this degree.National Certification as recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
