KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Laboratory Support Supervisor provides administrative and technical leadership for the phlebotomy services in the hospital and specimen processing services in the laboratory.
  • The supervisor accepts clinical and technical guidance from the Administrative Director of the Laboratory as well as the Laboratory Medical Director.
  • As an integral part of the laboratory management team, working collaboratively with all members of the laboratory department and other hospital departments.
  • Responsible for all scheduling and training of staff, accurate specimen collection/handling and front-line problem resolution for support services staff in phlebotomy and specimen processing.
  • Ensures process and procedural effectiveness in the specimen processing area.
  • Maintains high quality service standards consistent with department goals and expectations.
  • Works toward continuous improvement in services related to internal and external customers.
  • Liaises with SMG physician practices within Carney and outside Carney’s purview.
  • Has the authority to take disciplinary action and prepare performance evaluations for phlebotomists and specimen processors.
  • Has the authority to hire, schedule staff, and assign daily work as necessary for all lab support personnel.
  • Has the authority to prepare payroll for all support personnel.
  • Has the authority to address and solve employee problems and/or issues,
  • Has the authority to resolve complaints and/or problems to ensure exceptional customer service.
  • Will address all RL solution incidents in coordination with the laboratory administrative director.
  • Has the authority to order supplies as needed, adhering to the budget designed by the laboratory administrative director.
  • Has the authority to provide information, including but not limited to, testing methods, specimen requirements, and services.
  • Has the authority to represent Support Services staff of Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing in all regulatory inspections.
  • Has the authority to investigate, write and revise all procedures related to support services in conjunction with the laboratory administrative director.
  • Has the authority and will maintain competency to work as specimen processor when needed.
  • Has the authority to correct billing issues related to Meditech and XClaim rejections. This will be as a back-up to the laboratory administrative director.
  • Accepts full responsibility for full training, periodic competency, and oversight of all laboratory support services personnel as deemed by state, national, and federal accrediting agencies.
  • Will be able to successfully explain to inspecting agencies how support services comply with standards and regulations.
  • Performs quality indicator reviews ensuring completeness and works with the lead quality technologists and laboratory administrative director for performance improvement initiatives.
  • Provides appropriate orientation to all new and current employees on new procedures on a timely basis.
  • Assesses competence of support services staff and certifies their adherence to continuing education requirements.
  • Assesses annual performance of support service staff.
  • Is familiar with all hospital policies that effect the continuous quality function of support services
  • Follows organizational and departmental policies regarding safety, record keeping, and regulatory requirements, to provide for the quality care of patients.
  • Is part of the weekend rotation in the Phlebotomy department to maintain competency in technical expertise.
  • Additionally, follows all aspects of the Phlebotomy/Front Staff job descriptions
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  1. Education: Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a science related field preferred
  2. Experience: 3-5 years’ experience in laboratory management preferred
  3. Certification/Licensure: Phlebotomy certification
  4. Software/Hardware: 3-5 years’ experience using a LIS and/or HIS system, working knowledge of all Microsoft 365 applications, functioning knowledge of billing claims application preferred.
  5. Other: Annual training for biohazardous shipping required
