Speech Therapist II, Per Diem, Varied Shifts, Weekends as Needed

I. Position Function: Administers and directs administration of diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic treatment utilized in the short and long term rehabilitation of out-patients with speech, language, swallowing and hearing impairments when requested by parents as part of the REACH follow up Program

II. Job Relationships: Collaborates with the following staff, by job category:

Occupational Therapy


Social Service


III. Authority: Has the authority to select and perform all aspects of evaluation, treatment and patient care within the guidelines of the hospital, under state and federal licensing regulations, and ethical and standards of care adopted by ASHA.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."

Evaluates, diagnoses, treats and counsels patients. Implements/administers treatment utilizing appropriate speech-language pathology interventions/procedures.

Takes all precautions for observing indications and contraindication, including patient's emotional and physical condition, explains testing or treatment, goals, home programs to patient/family/others as indicated.

Instructs/educates patients and families about continued therapy programs and use of devices and/or aids in order to assure patient's understanding and to facilitate treatment.

Maintains active and supportive communication with patients/family others regarding observation and evaluation of treatment effects.

Reports to and recommends changes to physicians if indicated: discusses progress, problems or other issues with staff members for collaborative interventions.

Refers patients to other appropriate professionals as indicated.

Maintains records pertinent to patient evaluation and treatments; reviews/documents patient progress; follows set guidelines for evaluation and record keeping.

Follows department and hospital policies and procedures in keeping with the mission and philosophy; maintains a high level of safety for patients and property.

Studies current trends and new developments in speech and language by survey of literature, attendance at professional meetings and conferences, participation in rounds and participation in department in-services.

Maintains standards set down by ASHA regarding diagnosis and treatment procedure and professional ethics.

Maintain current licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and current CPR certification.

Participates in the development of new programs and clinical services. Encourages development of interdepartmental programs.

Maintains equipment, material, supplies and inventory.

Provides input to the Director regarding budget and/or needs.

Assists with the maintenance of department cleanliness.

Represents the department in dealing with patients, other departments in the hospital, physicians, and external organizations.

Assists in the maintenance of morale, and harmonious personnel relations.

Perform various other duties as assigned or as dictated by responsibilities.

VI. Accountability: Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital related, medical staff related and patient related data and information.

Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital and department policies and procedures, including infection control.

Shall be accountable for accurately and safely performing all aspects of patient care in accordance with applicable state, federal and standard setting organization.

Shall be accountable for proper patient identification by asking patient’s name.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

Graduate of an ASHA accredited program.

Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology

Massachusetts License.
Minimum Experience:

Minimum skills/abilities:

Effective communication and educator skill.

Strong orientation to patient care in accordance with the Medical Center's values, particularly the holistic approach to healing.

Ability to deal with stress due to a fast paced and growing environment.

Ability to manage within a flexible schedule.

Current license in Speech Language Pathology in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Current CPR certification

Training: Training in continuing education annually
