POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the written referral of a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, dentist, osteopath, and in concert with other members of the hospital staff, the speech and language pathologist is responsible for the provision and direction of patient care services including evaluation, treatment, counseling, and education to inpatients and outpatients in the rehabilitation setting. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served; demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development; possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to age and cultural specific needs and to provide care needed in accordance with professional standard of practice.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides superior customer service to external and internal clients, customers as referenced in the Hospital Wide Performance Expectation.

  • Evaluates, diagnoses, treats and counsels patients. Implements/administers treatment utilizing appropriate speech-language pathology interventions/procedures.

  • Takes all precautions for observing indications/contraindications, including patient’s emotional and physical condition, explains testing or treatment, goals, home programs, in-hospital self exercises to patient/ family as indicated.

  • Instructs patients and families about continued therapy programs and use of devices and aids in order to assure patient’s understanding and to facilitate treatment

  • Maintains active and supportive communication with patients/families regarding observation and evaluation of treatment effects

  • Demonstrates clinical skills in performance and administration of MBS.

  • Reports to and recommends changes to physicians if indicated; discusses or clarifies order with referring MD; discusses progress, problems or other issues with staff members for collaborative interventions and discharge planning.

  • Refers patents to other appropriate professionals as medically indicated.

  • Carries patient load that reflects productivity standards

  • Maintains records pertinent to patient evaluations and treatments; reviews/ documents patient progress; follows set guidelines for evaluation and record keeping.

  • Follows department policies and procedures

  • Assists and directs and instructs ancillary and other personnel as necessary

  • Studies current trends and new developments in speech and language pathology by survey of literature, attendance at professional meetings and conferences, research activities and participation in department in-services.

  • Participates in the training of SLP students from ASHA accredited programs after 1 year of experience.

  • Participates in development of new programs and clinical services

  • Participates in the CQI process through audits, peer review, and other Quality Council approved activities.

  • Maintains knowledge of current third party payment procedures.

  • Maintains equipment, materials, supplies and inventory

  • Provides input to the Director of Rehabilitation Services regarding budget and or equipment needs.

  • Assists with the maintenance of department cleanliness.

  • Attends and actively participate in staff /team/committee meetings as assigned by Director of Rehabilitation Services

  • Performs various other duties as assigned by Director of Rehabilitation Services.

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reports formally and informally to the Director of Rehabilitation Services, regarding situations that require his attention.

  • The Director of Rehabilitation Services acts as immediate supervisor, regarding the ongoing status of Speech Language Pathology.

  • Reports immediately any deviations in normal operations to the Director of Rehabilitation Services.

  • Reports immediately any unusual occurrences related to patients, other staff, self, or equipment.

  • Reports all incidents and breaches in the quality of care to the Director of Rehabilitation Services and Risk Management Department verbally and in writing.

  • Reports to Primary care Physician/Referring Physician, any changes in the patient’s condition warranting intervention.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Shall be accountable for accurately and safely selecting and performing all aspects of patient care as delineated by license, and governed by state, federal and standard setting organizations.

  • Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital related, staff related, and patient related data and information.

  • Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital and departmental policies and procedures including infection control.

  • Shall be accountable for patient care by non-licensed personnel while under their supervision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent standing, sitting, pushing, bending, lifting and/carrying objects from 2-75+lbs (overhead: 2- 10lbs,above waist: 2-75lbs, below waist: 2-75+lbs). Occasionally twisting and climbing.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Supervises: Clinical Fellow (SLP/CF), SLP Assistants, SLP Students

Collaborates with:

  • Other members of Speech and Language Pathology (including Per Diem Staff), Physical Therapy Staff, Occupational Therapy Staff, Medical Staff, Audiology Staff, Nursing Staff, Respiratory Staff, Dietary Staff, Care Coordination, Interpreters, School Education professionals

AUTHORITY:

  • Has the authority to select and perform all aspects of treatment/evaluation and patient care within the guidelines of the hospital, under the state and federal licensing regulations, and ethical and standards of care adopted by ASHA.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  1. Education: Graduate of an ASHA accredited program, Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology
  2. Experience (Type & Length): None
  3. Certification/Licensure: Massachusetts license or license eligible, Certificate of Clinical Competence, Speech/Language Pathology (ASHA/CCC), SLP/Clinical Fellow: State License Application (Board of registration) and CF application (ASHA) both within 30 days of employment, Current CPR certification
