Operating Room Nurse fellowship Program (for current SEMC Nurses)

Here at St Elizabeth Medical Center, we have created a Perioperative Fellowship Program for nurses interested in training to become operating room nurses. We offer this program for experienced nurses interested in making the transition to the operating room.

Here are details about becoming an OR nurse through this program:

The Perioperative Fellowship Program (Periop 101) is six to nine months long and prepares registered nurses (RNs) for both the circulating and scrubbing roles in the operating room.

As an RN, you will be supported by unit preceptors, managers, and educator. Upon acceptance into the program, you are then employed by St Elizabeth Medical Center in their operating rooms:

Clinical Expectations

The Perioperative RN Fellowship Program is a 30-week training program for registered nurses who are new to the operating room environment. You will experience three weeks of didactic and simulation education as an introduction to the operating room. You will then spend three weeks with a preceptor to further orient you to the operating room and surgical procedures and standards.

The next fifteen weeks will be spent with preceptors as you rotate through each of the specialty services including General Surgery, Vascular, Neurology, Cardiac, Urology, GYN, and Robotics.

Becoming an OR nurse at St Elizabeth Medical Center requires that all participants sit for the Periop 101 exam at the end of the course. You may be required to purchase some educational materials, such as a textbook.

Requirements

• Required to work 40 hours each week for training.
• After training program is done eligible nurses must be able to work designated hours hired, call responsibility depending on the unit needs.
• No time off will be permitted during the five-month training period.
• Current Massachusetts or Compact RN licensure
• Minimum of one year RN experience working at SEMC
• BSN preferred.

In order for you to be considered for the position you will be expected to shadow in the OR for one shift, and shadow on call for one shift.

Job Summary –

Provides nursing care that has as its ultimate concern supporting the total person and promoting adaptation of the individual. This is accomplished by counseling, teaching, direct care, and collaboration/consultation with other health care professionals. The Staff Nurse meets patient needs in accordance with the Nursing Division's philosophy, policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience:â¯

• Associates Degree in nursing required.
• BSN preferred.

Minimum skills/abilities:

• Meets performance criteria of Staff Nurse.
• Able to communicate verbally and in writing in the English language.
• Able to complete mathematical computations required to administer medications and treatment protocols.
• Able to lift, transfer and move patients.
• Possess basic computer knowledge.

Certification/Licensure:â¯

• Current licensure in Massachusetts as a Registered Nurse.
• BLS/ACLSâ¯required.
• PALS required.
• CNOR preferred
