Job Summary:

Performs a wide range of complex duties related to the reprocessing of surgical instrumentation including accurate documentation of sterilization logs. Oversees and participates in the decontamination, inspection, cleaning, assembling, and packaging of surgical linens, instruments, trays, basin sets, and prepares items for sterilization. Instructs and educates others on proper cleaning, assembly and sterilization methods and principles as related to surgical instrumentation. Acts a resource person to the operating room staff. Other duties may be assigned as needed.


Demonstrates responsibility in the setting of priorities:

  • Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, and assembles wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments. Follows proper standard precautions.
  • Orders supplies necessary for instrument processing room
  • Works closely with CSR for completion of gas sterilized instruments and packs
  • Cleans instrument room on a rotational basis
  • Cleans sterilizers per recommendations
  • Reviews outdates in sterile instrument room
  • Maintains a clean environment in washer/decontamination room and sterile packaging room

Follows appropriately policy and procedure for position:

  • Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
  • Follows all safety, infection control policies/procedures related to department
  • Follows procedures to correctly utilize the washer/decontamination unit
  • Knowledge of sterilization methods, monitoring techniques
  • Maintains records/logs for autoclaves, sterile processing
  • Sorts mismatched sets of instruments, trays and medical equipment and makes them available to the sterile processing customer in a timely manner.


  • Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • 10 hours CE annually related to the functions of a central service technician
  • CPR/BLS by AHA within 90 day of hire.
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field
  • 2 years’ experience in sterile processing preferred.
  • Background clearances (as required by law).
