POSITION SUMMARY:

Assists in the nursing care and preparation of surgical patients. Functions as a member of the sterile team in donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field and issuing instruments to surgeons.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures and skill when assisting the surgical team throughout the procedure.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy for surgical procedures, anticipates supplies needed and had supplies available when needed.
  • Adhere to aseptic techniques practices, correcting breaks in technique if they occur.
  • Performs sponge, sharps and instruments counts according to MH&MC policy and procedure.
  • Prepares the room with appropriate instruments, supplies and equipment before the procedure and prepares the instruments for the decontamination process, removes unused supplies and equipment and restocks the room.
  • Handles specimens appropriately, identifying them correctly.
  • Managers repair of instruments and equipment, obtains loaners if necessary, notifies appropriate personnel and follows up when necessary.
  • Participates with the OR team to identify the patient, procedure and the side/site of surgery according to MH&MC policy and procedure.
  • Employee will comply with the principles of Infection Control and Aseptic Technique.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of relative Hospital and all-departmental policies and procedures including safety issues.
  • Possesses awareness of programs/services provided by Hospital and where they are located.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  • I. Education: High School education or equivalent.
  • II. Certification/Licensure: Currently enrolled in a Surgical Technology program preferred.
