Unit Secretary- Emergency Department- full-time, 40hrs wk, night shift, weekends not required, holidays required as needed.

Job Summary –

Under the supervision of the Patient Care Director, the unit secretary will perform a variety of secretarial duties in support of the administrative and clinical functions in the ED.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • High School Graduate.
  • Hospital experience preferred.

Minimum skills/abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Refined organizational skills.
  • Experience with computer systems preferred.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in the English language.
  • Ability to complete mathematical computations required to do assigned tasks.

Training

  • Training provided on unit with experienced unit secretary preceptor.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as unit receptionist, greeting visitors and, when necessary, directing personnel to various locations.
  • Request that families/visitors wait in designated areas.
  • Answer telephones and relay messages/ information as necessary.
  • Responds to Intercom directing patients request to nursing staff.
  • Make code calls/STAT pages as necessary.
  • Maintain an accurate up to date record of unit activity including: admissions, transfer, census.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of tests and lab work.
  • Accurately maintain ED patient record files.
  • Serve as communication Liaison between unit and other departments.
  • Arrange for transport of patients as directed by schedules.
  • Separate charts and accurately process all associated forms relative to Coding/Billing Process.
  • File all reports and records promptly.
  • Prepare secretarial supply orders in collaboration with Patient Care Manager.
  • Keep informed of any changes in report procedures, as in death certificates, patient restrains, etc.
  • Participate in staff meetings/conferences as appropriate.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor to patients, professional staff, and co-workers.
